I have been getting intermittent hard starts and am wondering if the fuel pump is the problem. The car has 140k and the fuel pump has never been replaced. The problem usually occurs when the car has been sitting for a few days, it will take 2 or three times to get it started. It sounds like it is cranking strong and it does eventually start. As long as the car hasn't been sitting for more than a day it will start up fine and I never have trouble when the car is warm or running. The CPS was replaced probably 15k miles ago because the car would randomly die. Since then I haven't had any problems. I am just wondering if anyone can confirm that I should replace the fuel pump since it isn't a cheap part. It sounds like it isn't all that common for the fuel pump to be an intermittent problem but it really sounds like this could be my issue.

If you have 140K on the original fuel pump motor, you're riding on borrowed time, it's not a question of if it will fail, but when. Usually, the fuel pump motor fails when you need the car the most. 100K miles is about all you can expect from the fuel pumps motor. It's the fuel pump "motor" that fails and gets replaced, not the entire unit. There are quite a few tutorials around the net regarding installing a new motor in your fuel pump. The actual motors are not expensive, I got mine here: http://www.fuel-pumps.net/
Even replacing your fuel pump motor may not solve your hard start problem, it's possible that pressure from your fuel system is bleeding off when the car sits for a while. If that is happening, you may need to replace the white check valve just on top of the fuel pump. The ball inside the check valve get stuck over time and allows fuel to drain back into the tank when sitting for a while, causing a hard start..

Photo,
I have a few questions if you would assist: I contacted the website you have in the post above and asked them about getting the motor for my 2001 9-5 V6. They said they only sold complete assemblies and not the Walbro pump separately. Any additional information would be appreciated. Where do you get the check valve and do you have a part #? There is some kind of repair/retainer kit to prevent the fuel line in the tank from coming loose...was either a recall or TSB. Any info on that? Part numbers etc.? If I replace only the pump I believe there is some risk if damaging the existing fuel Line. Do you know where to get the proper diameter line. Others ave had to get slightly larger and rely on cranking it down tight with a camp. I think the proper size is 1/4" and the only readily available is 3/8" that mess spec for submersible. Thanks in advance! |

So after doing a lot more reading I am figuring that it is most likely the check valve since it only happens when the car has been sitting for an extended period of time. What is involved in the replacement? I have seen a lot of information but wasn't really understanding. Some stuff I read said that it is impossible to get off without just cutting the fuel line or replacing the entire line but I didn't find any pictures of how a new valve was spliced on. And how much work is it to replace the entire fuel line instead of splicing?

Just checked over the service history that the previous owner gave me and it looks like the fuel pump was replaced at 46k because of a problem with the fuel level sensor. But that still means this pump has around 100k on it.

I got my check valve at eEuroparts.com, just go to the website and enter the info for your car, the check valve should be easy to find. If you replace only the motor in your fuel pump assembly, there is no danger that you will damage existing fuel lines, there are many tutorials out there that cover the process. There is a kit out there made by, "Dorman", go to Amazon and do a search for "Dorman Fuel Kit", you'll find it....the kit can be used to replace your check valve...

TheSaabSite sells the Walbro pump kit for $ 102, it should contain all you need and good instructions are on this site. You will need the pump, 8" of fuel line and stainless clamps and a bit of patience to wiggle the assembly out of the tank.
