Default Ignition problem?

I turn the key and...silence,turn it again and it starts right up.Thats how it started a few months ago,now it stalls while driving and won't start for a while, like 20 mins. or so.I figured a loose wire so I pulled of the surround on the ignition. There is some black electical tape around the wires a little farther down than I can see without pulling the ignition out.Do you folks think thats a good place to start,if so how does the ignition come out. Thanks for any help,Lou.

If it stalls while driving as well as takes a little bit to start up it could be a few things:

Neutral Saftey Switch
Ignition Module
Grouding issue

have you done anything recently to the car?

CPS or DIC.

I would change the CPS first, it is an inexpensive wear item anyway, and see what you get.

No noogies, possible wedgie.

If you are going to own, operate, enjoy and work on your Saab (that is unless you can afford to pay a mechanic or dealer) then you need to spend at least an evening (if not longer) reading and reading and getting to know the idiosyncrasies of your Saab.

CPS – crankshaft position sensor

DIC – direct ignition cassette

Knowledge is the key....

Enjoy....

Neither of those sensors is going to prevent the car from cranking over.......

The way I read it the OP isn't even getting the starter cranking at times.

Do you really believe that? You need to check out the FAQ"s on the site; like Bob3000 said knowledge is the key.

Yes I do. Please enlighten me as to how the coil packs or crank sensor prevent the starter from turning?

CPS or DIC making car stall or not starting, yes. CPS or DIC making starter not crank? Not a chance.

A starter won't take months to die, nor will it cause the car to stall once it starts. I can go for a corroded or loose cable connection; but I wouldn't rule out the DIC or the CPS; I would check these first.

I never once said it was the starter nor did I intend to sound like it might be the starter.

I was simply defending myself for what I interpreted as a slap.

OP said car wouldn't do ANYTHING at times, as in starter doesn't even engage, then at other times stall when driving then refuse to start for a period of time. The car not doing ANYTHING certainly isn't the DIC "coil pack" or CPS "crank position sensor".

I think the op should take a good look at the ignition switch. That will cause every symptom that was described.

You both seem correct to me.I bought this car last Nov. and it's a great car, although it occasionally won't start but it is just an instant,I turn the key a second time and it always starts.I noticed the electrical tape down the hole where the key switch is which leads me to believe someone was in there before. The stalling just started last Friday. It has 102,000 mi. so I'm thinking maybe I have two problems now.

Check out the FAQ's; KNOWLEDGE IS KEY". The OP never mentioned the starter.
The bottom lines is the OP was able to correct the problem; all we do here is try to help each other out; not slap each other around.

My interpretation:

I turn the key and...starter motor does nothing, turn it again and starter motor turns and cranks engine and engien starts.

Now I think I understand what the OP meant was:

I turn key and...car cranks over but doesn't start, turn it again and it starts right up.

My bad.

I definitely would have suggested other times if I had interpreted the OP's post differently.

I ride Harley Davidsons and always run a jockey shift"foot clutch, hand shift".I'm on a couple of shovelhead forums and it's easy to have one name to remember.

Awesome. I'm almost done with my first build and am fabricating a jockey setup. Never ridden w/ a jockey or suicide rig before so I'm interested in how it's gonna turn out.
