Hopefully, you are asking about manual transmission. If you are, the Owners Manual recommends 2L (or roughly 2 quarts) of 10W30 motor oil. I use Quaker State, but I change it every year. You will be very surprised at how many filings are attached to the drain plug magnet the first time you drain the oil. BTW, make sure that you can get the fill plug out before you remove the drain plug... Ron

I thought transmissions required dedicated transmission fluid. Can you really use motor oil?

If you wanna spend some money.

Read up on this
http://www.genuinesaab.com/psi/files/trans-oil-9000.pdf

and this:
http://www.genuinesaab.com/psi/files/93-95man-oil.htm

If you want, use the 0063 oil but use the procedure in the first link to change over to it properly.

Not in your car, you will have "Saab Synthetic Man Trany Fluid".

Again, please specify if you are asking about an manual or auto transmission. If you are asking about a manual transmission, I will scan the page from my 1997 Owners Manual. Some switch to synthetic oil, but remember that synchronizers require some friction to shift properly and some synthetic oil reduces the friction too much... Ron

That's true for Adam. The original poster's car came with motor oil in the transmission from the factory, though. I'm waiting for Saab to come up with yet another oil for our transmissions. We've had motor oil and two different synthetics so far!

If I wanted to change the MTF in my 98 900, and didn't want to go to the expense of using the MTF0063, would either Red Line or Royal purple be a good substitute? Can I change directly to them without doing the fill, drain, refill procedure?

Tom

Redline MTL works great. I know it's a direct replacement for the synthetic that came before MTF0063. I'm not sure if any flush/fill procedures are required if you're replacing motor oil with MTL, though.

Interesting. I know if you put synthetic gear oil in a 3 gen RX-7 Manual gearbox it will turn it into slop.

I know Honda supposedly makes a fantastic gear box oil, wonder what it is. Also what should I put into my 2000 Viggen?
