Default 1984 900 GL going free

Just got into work and my colleague tells me there is a 1984 Saab 900 GL that friends of hers are scrapping. She mentioned it to me thinking I might know some people who'd be interested in parts. Which I do . It is in Arborfield near Reading, and apparently it drives fine, but the CV Boot needs replacing. No Tax or MOT on it, but it's going free, so if anyone's interested let me know and I'll e-mail them to say we're coming down.

I don't know anything more than it runs OK, needs a new CV boot has no tax or MOT and they just want to get rid of it. I'm expecting to hear a bit more tomorrow from the owners. I can't think of anything I would need off it after our little trip to Essex last year. I've got about half a 900 in parts stored in the garage already I'll post any details as I get them.

Default shipping

Anyone know what it cost to ship a car across the little pond? I wouldn't mind have her for shipping cost...

Just heard some more from the owners. Will post more as I get it.

Great to hear from you. To be honest I think that it would be perfect for parts. The general condition is not great i.e. there is a bit of rust on wheel arches and sills as well I think. The trim inside, along the
roof is coming away due to mould caused by a leak in the rear screen. Like I said before, the engine runs beautifully. It had to have a re conditioned
starter motor fitted as it did have problems starting.

It is light blue, manual, has power steering, alloy wheels (with 2 new tyres I think), sunroof, central locking, heated rear screen, it was a turbo but the turbo has been removed. The air con has also been disconnected. If it is
going to be scrapped or given away we will remove the radio but there is a blaupunk cassette/radio in there at the moment. There is also an electric aerial. It hasn't actually failed an MOT because we got a new car and never put it through. My husband is pretty sure that it would have failed on the windscreen and the CV boot/universal joint on one side but that was never checked. I am sure we have some history and the manual etc. but I would have to check the specifics with my dad who owned it before me. It would break my heart for it to be scrapped in it's current state but I would be very pleased if even parts of it could be used. My dad would be able to give very specific details on what's been done to it as he loved the car and has spent
hours tinkering with it!

You planning to build a 12 wheeler then Paul? I'm not sure of the alloy style yet, but her dad is doing a list of what's on it and what he's had done over the last few years. He looked after it well, apparently, so it should be in good order mechanically, and then 1 lady owner after that. I was starting to think of taking it for myself, but I've just moved into a tiny cottage and more than 1 car would block the road completely . I'll have some bits off it if no-one wants the whole thing, though. Seat handles :idea

Blimey :! Right then, I suppose we're parting it out. If it's got seat catches I'm having them, headlamp wipers if they're any good (not motors).

Hu - To be honest, I have no idea about shipping costs to the states, but I wouldn't have thought it would be economical for anything over a few grammes. You might be better off seeing if there is something at least on the same continent as yourself, although its up to you - if we gut the thing we can put some bits aside for you.

Matthew - I think they'd prefer to get rid of it fairly soon, probably within the next 2 weeks, so I doubt the weather will be great, but it couldn't be much worse than last time. Could it? :-? I'll keep an eye on the forecast when we get a date set up.

Um, does anyone know any scrapyards in the Arborfield or Reading area?

Hello Rage - what are you up to in the near future

Not necessarily... just thought I'd stake my claim at an early opportunity :P

I'd still rather see the car back on the road and used regularly than broken for parts.

My enthusiasm evaporated entirely during the day the other car was broken up. Respect to you lot for persevering through dreadful working conditions.

Uh oh

I'm busy! Honest!!!!

As above, I'd prefer a car to live on, remember the one we broke was doomed anyway. But if you need a hand, I'll help if I can...

(What am I saying???!!!)

I live near Guildford, only about 40 mins away. If you do a thorough stripping of the car I'd like to come along, I'm not sure that I need any parts but I'd like to see how these things are done.

See ya.

Ooh, actually rear spoiler if it has one, and maybe sunroof wind deflector again, if it has one.

I agree that it would be better to keep it on the road if we can. If it is literally only a CV joint stopping it from gambolling about the countryside then it would be a shame to gut it. How easy is it to change one? Can it be done in the street, or can the car drive anyway with a broken one? Since Matthew was the first to contact me about it he gets first shout on it, but I'm sure we can come to some arrangement. Unfortunately I simply don't have room for it. I have e-mailed the owner some more questions:

How bad is the CV joint? Can the car be driven?
Can the car be towed by another car?
What kind of alloy wheels, ie 3 spoke aero, incas, minilites.
What is the upholstery - leather or fabric?
Is it a 3 door or 5 door?

If anyone has any other questions about it let me know and I will e-mail her again.

I suppose if it is a 3 door with leather I might be interested in some seat action. Not if anyone else wants some desperately.

My seats are fine but the drivers side heater doesn't work, which is kinda annoying.

Sounds to me like its just a CV gaiter thats the problem. Even so, its not a very tricky job to change the joint itself. Side of the road/on someones drive type of job.

Assuming that it is just the CV gaiter then, which is what she is saying, and when I get more information on it generally, maybe what we should do is put in a list those who want the whole car, and if that isn't feasible then who wants what bits. This naturally includes everyone who has posted so far, but the consensus does seem to be in favour of keeping it whole, so if thats OK with people then sign up if you want it. Again, Matthew gets first shout for being quickest on the draw  What happens after that I have no idea. Pillow fights? Scissors paper stone?
*Dons anorak* We should help this car find a home - if we can't do it god knows who can.

If it really is a simple job to fix it and get it tested, why aren't they selling it? Any Mot'd C900 must be worth £600 of anyones money?

Just a thought.
