Default Power Steering problem

My '06 9-3 power steering has a strange problem. While turning the power steering fluctuates from being smooth to a loss of power. I can only describe it as if there was a belt that power assists but then the belt continually slips making it more difficult to turn.

Any ideas on possible causes?

Did you check power steering fluid level?
You might have a leak and the pump will struggle.
Did you hit any pothole recently?
Belt failure is an option but only on petrol engines.

Fluid level is fine.
It is a Petrol 2.0 Aero.
I could check for leaks but I'd appreciate hints on where to look as I'm not familiar with the Power Steering arrangement. I want to rule out as much as possible before I hit the garage as they are notorious for turning simple problems into expensive fixes.

the diagnosis is a loose power steering lug - any pointers on how to fix this or is a new one needed?

I'm guessing it needs to be tightened...

I didn't quite understand what he was telling me but I think it is actually a Knuckle join on the steering column that was loose or broken but it was causing the steering to stiffen and loosen.

it's the 2.0 aero. The repair cost will depend on whether the knuckle join can be sourced independently or a new rack is needed...
