Default Thermostat sensors

Check engine light came on 04 wagon and sometimes the temp gauge does not work. When temp gauge works it goes to normal position. Had local service shop check the code and they say I need to replace a thermostat sensor and want about $300. They say there are 2 of them and you should replace both.

I have found threads talking about replacing the thermostat and sensor but I have found nothing about 2 sensors.

any info appreciated

thanks
jb

4 or V6? Not sure abot the B6 but the has only one sensor and if the temp gauge drops to ) it means it is the thermostat not the sensor, guranteed...if the ecu senses it it taking too long for the car to get up to temp ( or wil not col fast enoughh) it will drop you temp gauge to 0 in order to tel lyo it needs a thermostat, only car I know tha tis smart enough to tell you a mechanical stat is bad awesome

One thermostat, one temperature sensor. The thermostat is a little inconvenient to replace due to its location and obstruction by the wiring harness, the temp sensor is pretty easy.
