Exclamation Looking for a good aftermarket exhaust... any ideas?

I own a well maintained 2000 Saab 9-5 Aero that needs anew mid-mount muffler. I figured that I mine as well do something aftermarket and get the sound out of my car that I really want. Any ideas?

I'm on the straight pipe wagon (literally!) as well, minus a few other parts.

I still have my 'resonator'.

It's really not that loud? At all? It's kind of freaky.

To answer your question of "any ideas" rather than just statiing what we have. There are:

JT - mild steel; sound great but will rust in a few years. Some say they are too loud; in my opinion they sound most like an old 900 turbo
Maptun/BSR - in my opinion looks rubbish but people say it sounds throaty and subtle. Ie deeper but not necessarily louder
Abbott 3"(i have this full system) - good deep note but most report of cabin drone at highway speeds
Think about getting an exhaust shop to make you a custom
3" exhaust. Prob be cheaper than ANY of the above and below, get quoted.
Ferrita - swedish exhaust company that make great, but expensive systems (wish i had got theres)
Hirsch - not worth the price and you'd struggle to get hold of one now
And of course straight pipes - cheap solutions for replacement and to make more noise if thats what you want

Type in all those names on your search engine to see prices and where to get from etc.

It'd prob be worth your while to get a full 3" system, it massively reduces lag, and also means you can jump straight to "stage 3" with a remap. Less restriction on the turbo means free-er revving, better throttle response and better mpg if you drive the same as before (but you'll probably enjoy the sound so won't!).

I hope thats a little more constructive for what your after rather than people using it as a flaunt it thread.

to add...

CTI - (Custom Tubes Inc) relatively inexpensive 3" system. Offered in aluminized steel and stainless.

Off topic...

I broke an exhaust stud right after the DP and have been driving with an open downpipe for about a week. I secretly love the sound and have been putting off drilling the stud out. I can do anything I want to the cars and my wife doesnt care, but this apparently has to go.

Ill try to get a clip this weekend for you. Its nice and loud (of course) with a lot of pop and fizzle on decel. When I heel and toe downshift, it sounds really amazing (it makes me giddy every time) It does seem to me that spool up is quicker, but it may just be because the turbo is so loud now. And just to reiterate, the turbo is REALLY loud now.

So while I was working on my 99'SE this past week I noticed that my rear muffler is starting to rust through in spots. Any recommendations for just the rear muffler? What about Bosal?

Stay away from Custom Tubes Inc. unless you like bad customer service. I was quoted one to one and a half weeks for a turbo-back from the guy, and ended up waiting more than three weeks. The company is a small shop run by a guy who could care less about you and doesn't know how to form a sentence in his emails. The website itself has been half-finished for about a year. I can't say anything about the quality of the exhaust yet (still haven't received it), but I would not have gone with this shop had I known about the crap I've been put through.

If the problem is limited to just the center resonator, have a muffler shop remove it and install a piece of straight pipe in its place. All of the aftermarket performance systems eliminate the center resonator and utilize a rear muffler only.

My signature block describes my exhaust system. No droning at highway speeds but the SAAB/Remus system was discontinued around 4 years ago.

I know the sound.

I had a heck of a time getting proper alignment between the GS downpipe and SAAB/Remus system after installing the DP last Spring. For a week or so I had a MASSIVE exhaust leak at the exit of the DP. Amazingly I had no excessive cabin noise at highway speed, but punching the throttle would result in a roar so loud you would have thought the Gates of H*ll had just opened. Throttle response was impressive too.

I miss that sound............

Ditto on the CTI - I've got the 3" stainless from the DP back. Awesome system and it sounds throaty yet refined. straight resonator with a Magnaflow muffler AND it looks almost stock from the rear with a polished oval tip. Love it!
