so a " time for service" light just went on. I know I need to get new breaks soon, but could it be something else? I cant afford to get it fixed for about a week.

its a light that is pre programmed to come on in the car. I got a 90 thousand mile service done a few thousand miles before it was due and when I got close to the marker the light came on in my car as well after the service had already been completed.

the dealer has a way to turn the light off I just dont remember the steps the guy said.

ditto - the message is related to an algorithm that computes when you need a service visit. Its factored on various conditions and detailed somewhere on this site (search)

It is NOT an indication that anything is 'wrong' - there are other messages you would see instead (gearbox malfunction, etc)

You can clear the message yourself by fiddling around in the SID settings - there is a 'reset service indicator' option in the area where it tells you your oil quality (only available when TFS message appears, otherwise you wont see this option listed)

it also comes on when it is time to change the oil. Mine is on right now.

Once the oil is changed, just push the info knob and go into the settings and reset the oil life. If this is your problem.
