That sound is the exact reason I absolutely hate electric cars. Long live the internal combustion engine!

Another fine example of the "Black Arts" that convert solids straight to gases.

Absolutely hate loud burbling V8s.

Sounds inefficient and wasteful. Recalls memories of big dumb fishing boats. (Which what many of the cars equipped with them are like )

The purring even rev of a straight 6 is the most lovely sound of any engine though.

This is reason enough to me to never own a V8 (unless its a flat crank V8, like Ferrari's)

The I6 M3 is possibly the best sounding engine ever.

Though for some reason the V8 in the new E92 M3 sounds much better than anything American made I have ever heard. Has a nice purring smoothness to it that gives off a little roar when really pushed. Probably a combination of not being a pushrod and well designed exhaust flows, I think...

Ok. Fair enough.

But you won't convince me otherwise.

We don't all have to like the same things.

I need my engines to sound smooth, or I guess the word I'm looking for is refined, with just a hint of a roar under full load as the revs go up. They absolutely have to be free and quick revving too

To try to explain why I feel this way, I guess it stems from two different aspects of the way I think.

Firstly, I guess it has a something to do with the feeling that something is well designed. The more thought and design goes into something the smoother it operates. It may not be accurate in all occasions, but I think it stems from my conservation of energy kind of thinking. Energy in -> energy out. So if there is more sound, heat or other dissipation of energy, less of that energy is outputted as propulsion I like doing more with less.

Secondly, it has to do with being refined. A gentleman does not scream and make a scene at the party. A drunken ******* does I feel the same way about cars. They can be fun and look nice, but being to loud (both color and sound) seems ungentlemanly, and thus something I don't like

I have always found raw power in all shapes and forms unattractive, instead favoring all things refined and classy.

Though I have to admit that I absolutely hate it when someone in one of those F250's with flowmasters drives by. Its just excessively loud and bothersome.

I guess I have a built in aversion to anything that could be described as raucous. Pretty much anything you'd hear people screaming "wooohooo" to in West Virginia, Budweiser in hand, drives me nuts

I'm with Mattlach, I've never liked the sound of a throaty v8. Riding in my friend's 454 SS Chevelle always gave me a headache. They just sound slow and fat. I like the motors that just scream when you thrash them. A couple that I can think of is the 1970-1983 Datsun L series straight six motors. The v6 Yahama SHO motor. The 12v VW vr6 motor. Of course some of the exotics like the Ferrari Daytona, the Aston Martin DB5 (well really all of them), and really any air cooled 911.

Those V8's will sound smooth if they didn't have straight pipes on and instead some pedestrian collection of muflers, cats and resonators etc.

Put straight 4" pipes on your Saab, swing them out under side skirts and listen how it sounds. I imagine it will be rather loud indeed.

Hell you are just talking about a lopey idle because of a high RPM camshaft!

Just get in a boat, erm land yacht from 1978 with emissions strangled engine and low RPM camshaft and it will sound smooth for ya

In terms of smoothness there isn't much that can beat a regular V8 engine, 90 degrees... flat plane V8 is no good, "normal" crank is what is needed. The balance of this configuration is excellent and it sounds cool (IMO). But yeah, hop into a V8 car and twist the key, you will notice right away the smoothness, it just spins up instead of "jumping" like a 4-cylinder

Of course a powerful V8 often can make the car rock from side to side if you stab the gas pedal repeatedly, which is something I find so totally awesome and it makes me giggle

Amen, if you can't appreciate the beautiful raucousness of a big V8 doing it's thing then you might as well cut off your balls and hand in your min license.

Life's much more fun when you learn to let go and embrace the over-the-top, in general, not just with cars.

Here you go.... over-the-top starts around 1:35.

I can appreciate the smooth engine in my Saab, and I love that feeling rolling into the power when the turbo kicks in, but in my heart I wish that my B234R had the sort of "torque on demand" at low revs that a big, lumpy v8 delivers.

Maybe if Saab actually produced their v8 design more people would be interested. Imagine that....

the "related links" or whatever vids, the diesel rat rod is awesome
never even imagined something like that for some reason
I like the sound of V8s, btw, especially when they're 502cu. inch (supercharged, as well) big blocks in cigarette/fountains, etc (boats)
