Alright,
I hope it is not true, but I have been seeing many subtle rip-offs from Saab into the regular GM line for years. Mostly in cadillac, pontiac, and now the new Malibu.
I see MANY body lines from saab into these other vehicles. there are also more and more shared parts like vents, door handles, seats, electronics, etc.
I hope that GM does not simply rob all the tech from the saab to use in a CHEVY and then dump the line.
GM already had/has a luxury line in cadillac, and I hope during the next few severly cost cutting years they do not eliminate the saab brand.
I love my saab because it has many saab features. putting 1 or two saab features into various other GM products does not make them a saab.

I also know that the SAAB brand has taken many items and tech from GM, but I feel that those are more hidden (frame, structure) and less a requirement for calling it SAAB.
Ford has been doing it to Volvo and Jag.

Time wil tell.

So, you're saying that the frame, engine are less important than styling?

Saab's been part of the borg collective for more than a decade now. and as of a couple years ago they have no independent engineers. The quesiton isn't whether parts and styles flow one way or the other, or whether a true saab exists anymore. It's whether a particular car is any good or not.

Many more shared parts than what? Previous Saabs?

I find it amusing when you guys in the US complain about shared parts in the 9-3SS - believe me, it has far fewer shared switches and handles etc than previous generation Saabs.

The only difference is the modern parts are shared with other cars in the GM US car pool, as opposed to previous Saabs which used the GM Europe parts bin bits (Vauxhaul/Opel). Much of the switchgear on an NG900 is straight out of the Opel parts bin...

Saab has been sharing and borrowing parts from other GM models for 20 or more years, it's just you guys have only just started to notice!

I like it and will give it a look when the lease is up on the SC.

RWD, mmmm....if that diesel was offered it would be much more tempting.

The world really does need more choices in wagons. The pickings have been slim since the advent of the SUV. I aplaud GM for giving us more choice. Now we need Toyota and Honda to bring back some decent offerings and we will have a real market.

A differant skin but doesn't look bad to me. Should be interesting to take it for test drive to feel if there is any differance in performance. I think we all know that Saab is the unwanted step-child. If GM really wanted to make the brand better it could easily released a Saab version the Saturn Solice to compete with the BMW.

Watch this bit from Top Gear where they rip on the Cadillac BLS as being just a Saab wannabe. It might make you feel a little better....

That Top Gear segment was pretty funny....good thing they are not radio hosts or else nobody would get anywhere in that country...

It's ironic to read "A4" guy post that. If A4 owns an A4, he owns a fancy VW. Gee, now that is something to brag about. Pot calling the kettle black.

What I really hate about em is how they take Saab into other GM makes while virtually ignoring Saab sales at the Caddy/Hummer/Saab dealers

Everytime I hear an advertisement for my local Caddy/Hummer/Saab dealerships its ALWAYS pimping Caddy. They almost never mention Saabs outside of the dealership name. And then the salesmen at these places tend to know almost nothing about Saabs, frequently less than 1/8 of the entire lot is dedicated to Saabs - the rest overwhelmingly in favor of Caddy....which IMO only has 2 makes (CTS and Escalade) which isnt obviously targeted to the old geezers demographics

Seriously though, who in thier right mind under the age of 70 buys a DTS? That boat wont even fit in my 3 car garage! (I know, they loaned me one once - god awful gas guzzlin boat)

Further - GM also likes to boast more models of vehicles that get better than 30mpg. My 9-3 averages 34mpg and whenever GM does do some marketing for Saab they never mention how fuel efficient these vehicles can be. Its always 'born from jets'. OK, fine...but when Americans are ditching Escalades and Hummers left and right for 4cyl cars - why not mention what a great 4cyl the 2.0 is?

It is nice not owning a car that you can't swing a dead cat without hitting (is that still politically correct? where did that saying come from?) Cadillacs aren't bad cars and have a ton of good features. I just wouldn't own one. Too angular. They do perform well in many respects. My buddy has a caddy for business and it really flys. It gets pretty good mileage when driven responsibly too. There are some interior features I wish our Saab's had.

Tha Caddy looks like sxxt! Something unfinished about those choppy lines, atrocious design IMHO. Reminds me of the boxy pre-1999 Volvos.

Not to mention it handles well with suspension tuned on the Nurboring.
