Well, im in my second year of college, i plan on majoring in marketing but im not totally sure what career opportunities i should approach, i know i have some time to decide but iv been trying to figure out what exactly i should do within marketing, i was thinking about becoming a buyer or something along those lines, but im still very much undecided, i was just curious to see if there any marketing majors out there on the forum, and if so what do you guys do? what kind of salary would i be looking at for the various jobs out there? im just curious to see, what the future holds for me

Marketing covers a multitude of sins but is a necessary evil. I generally have as little to do with it as possible, but the marketing department tends to be my first point of contact in a company - I'm an editorial consultant in the travel industry.

Every business now seems to have a marketing department, same as they all want their own newsletter or in-house magazine. I don't know what half of them get up to, but in terms of versatility there has to lots of scope in marketing. Salaries I don't know - check the jobs section of a few papers. Good luck with it anyway.

Thanks, its good to know that i wont have trouble finding a job because every company has a marketing department, hopefully ha anyone else wana chime in?

As you say, the marketing dept is usually the first point of contact for journalists. Some of them seem to resent the intrusion (maybe too busy dreaming up ideas for that in-house magazine that nobody reads). Fortunately, others appreciate the mutual benefits and they are the ones that get the coverage.

I'm going for finance, but i still want to do marketing, so i'm thinking MBA? that will include both right, as well as accounting? lol i should know this already after two years.

I have a BBA degree in Automotive Marketing and Management and I am working in IT.. Well... my education is in automotive technology and management.

Marketing (market getting) was always very cool until I actually had to study it. It just wasn't my cup of tea but it is very important to any kind of company. You just need to be the right kind of person for it. Sales is just a part of marketing.

Marketing is the basic makeup of modern day western culture, and the industry is explosive.

Salaries range from the ****ty $15hr to $250,000+ a year, all depends what you are doing.

Maybe it's different over your way, but over here we distinguish between sales and marketing, and our magazine's advertising dollars come via the sales department. Not a marketing degree among them, but somehow they get by.

The marketing dept produces pretty trend graphs and, erm, other stuff -- oh yeah, they do the glossy annual report. They are lovely people but if they all contracted a terminal virus tomorrow the magazine really wouldn't suffer much.

Thanks for the info, advertising is still an option for me, i would love to be creating ads and commercials for companies, especially auto manufacturers, can you imagine years from now if i was creating saab commercials and slogans and everyone on here would be harassing me saying how stupid and bad my ideas and slogans were hah jk i know you guys wouldnt do that, but anyways i still have a lot of research to do, i mean im only starting my second year so i have a lot of time
