Default Bad tires or bad bearings?

Replaced the Pirellis with Bridgestone G009s at 30K. Now approaching 50K, there is noticeable noise from the front which seems most likely tire noise, I have rotated and balanced them every 5K and there is no noticeable irregular wear.

Could the noise be bearings? It is louder on ashphalt and as a peculiar "howling" sound at about 50mph.

Should I bring it into the dealer especially as I am almost out of warrenty?

Does the howling increase with speed and decrease when you slow down? If so that would point to your bearings. It is also possible that your tires are cupped.

Before spending a quick hundred for the dealer to take a look, have your local wrench minkey throw it on a lift and check the bearings. If your OOW you don't have to pay Dealer rates for parts and labor. You'll be able to see cupping yourself.

"Cupping" looks as if someone has cut small circular spots into the tread of a tire.

The most common causes of cupping are worn out steering and/or suspension parts.

IMHO a mid-grade tire equates to mid grade life/wear also.

Tire noise and bad bearings do sound similar. I was in the same situation.

To diagnose drive at a moderate speed maybe 25-30 mph and turn the wheel in either direction to load the bearings. If noise increases you probably have a bad bearing.

My dealer didn't charge for the diagnosis as it takes maybe 2 minutes to diagnose while driving.

I had wheel bearings go out on my previous car (1999 mustang).

The ^ poster is right. Right at around 50km/hr , and make a smooth - long turn with the windows down. If you hear the howling STOP or GET LOUDER, its a bearing.

I can't remember, but I think if you turn left and the noise stops, it means your RIGHT bearing is bad and vice versa.

mine had the loud noise from the front end as well that I thought was a bearing on it's way out. I lucked into a great deal on tires at sams club ($180 for all 4 mounted balanced and out the door bridgestone potenza). When I was heading down the highway on the way home it took 5 min for me to realize something was missing. The sound I thought was a bad bearing was gone.

My old tires showed no signs of cupping they were just 1/2 worn crappy firestones.

Agree, it could be either. I've had exactly the same humming for the last 3,000 miles. Was pretty much convinced it was the tyres as they were below 3mm tread left. Unfortunately having replaced all the tyres the humming is still there.

I also get the "whump whump" sound when taking corners at low speed, which is most likely due to the bearings moving slightly. Apparently the 9-5 can do this too.

Looks like I'll be fitting some new wheel hubs soon!

LOL....no kidding it's like being on the moon with all of the car eating pot holes. Seriously though, I need brakes and tires soon, my pads have about 20% remaining, but by the sound that's coming from the wheels when I brake you'd think I was metal on metal..

In various cars, front tires can make a HELL of a lot of noise.

Our V70 XC had what felt like a dying front axle. So much noise and vibration. Cause? Tires...

Right now my dad's BMW is making TONS of noise from the front end. Dealer investigated. Loud ROAR at speed. Cause? Tires.

My 9-3 has new Sumitomos which are nearly silent. Love it.

Bridgestone Potenza RE950 picked them up at sam's club. They are a 195/60/15 and no it wasn't a typo.

That was all in for the 4 tires mounted balanced road hazard and out the door. No sales tax in NH.
