Angry chain tensioner gap of 7.9mm.. and rattling noise

I was considering to replace my chain as i am going to do my gasket soon..

opened up the tensioner today for first time

it wasnt so bad as i imagined.. the gap is 7.9 mm, i think its still far from the threshold.. lucky..

is it a nromal reading for a 1992 900i 177000 km??

i was expecting something like 10 mm or more o.o because i can actually hear some rattling noise while warming up the engine.. i guess it is just the valve..

now i guess the chain is fine, i only have to do the gasket now..

While you've got the valve cover off, pop in a new top timing chain guide -- you may be pleasantly surprised how much quieter the engine is.

I've gotta get round to measuring the tensioner on mine (160k(ish) miles) - it's a little rattly from a cold start, but I'm not sure if it's the chain or the hydraulic tappets, as it quiets down very quickly once oil's circulating - which suggests the tappets to me.

177k km - about 110k miles - seems "nicely run in" for one of these engines. Could it be tappets? How quickly does it quiet down?

According to my local Saab trained independant if the chain is only noisey on start up and before the engine is warm then there is nothing to worry about

the rattling noise quiet down in say 3 min?? i am not that sure...
the engine run very very well
but it has a blown gasket i think bubbles in water tank.. i need to refill 200 cc
every 2 to 3 weeks, a minor leak

i plan to do the gasket soon...

and damn i think i made a mistake when i put on the tensioner, i refited the tensioner and i dont know why i torqued another 15 to 30 degree on the tensioner body after the little spring thing is put in by 22 Nm, it is very very bad

i dont know why i did it ... hopefully 30 degree is not so much.. it might give too much pressure to the guide .. DAMN

ya, my school'd mechanic said so..

but i think its better to actually measure it...

btw,

is the timing chain in 900 turbo easier to break than in 900i??? or just ppl tend to rev it up in turbo car?? to open the boost

man u got a good engine

i think i probably need to adjust the timing or something, but the chian tesioner tells me only 7.9 mm...

it'll all become clear once you take the head off.

The chain might be in a decent condition just the chain guides are worn. the actual tensioner adjusting guide wears along with the chain and is to blame along with a slack/worn chain. check the cam spockets, see if there worn. if not its likely the chains ok too. but its an engine out job to replace the timing chain and guides. unless you can take out the stud that sits in the gearbox. thats all that was stoping me taking off the back plate once the pulley wheel is off.
