Any turbo will work with any software,for a while.
With very tuned s/w and small turbo like GT17 soon or a later you will blow the turbo,with big turbo on LPT s/w you will just have bigger lag but it will work better on high revs and there will be no problems.
We drove Viggen Stage3 with GT17 for a while after Mitsi 18 blow up but it is like the small size spare tyre-only for emergency.
As it was said many times before the best combination is perfect match between body and soul-ie hardware and ECU.
