Default Will 19"x8 wheels mess up my ride?

hi Boys and Girls,

This is my first time here. I just picked up a 07 2.0T in Titan grey last week and i've been thinking, if i should go with 18" or 19" wheels. since the factory wheels are 16's i'm a little hesitant in putting on 19's as i'm afraid that it might mess up the ride/suspention. the 19"'s would just look awesome i think.

Have any of you changed you're OEM's in to 19"? Any feedback/opinions would be much appreciated

Thanks
S

Welcome, I'll put this in the worshop where it belongs.

A few have had 19'' and reported feeling every bump in the road.

Thanks! That is my worry as well added on with the fact that it will be using 235/35/40's ...pretty sure one of the NYC roads will gobble up a few tires and wheels. I had a 2005 Acura TL about a year ago and within the first year i had to replace 2 bent wheels and tires.

Default Hey

Here is a picture of my 06 aero w/ 19" Rial's. I put General Exclaim UHP's with tire size 235/35ZR19. So far very happy with them. I wouldn't go any bigger then 235/35 because you risk rubbing. I don't think there is one member with 19"s that has gone bigger then 235/35. Tirerack recommends 225/35.

You might want to think about getting 18"s because that will allow for more rubber on the wheel and might keep the ride smoother, less bumpy, and from bending wheels. I live in SoCal and the roads are pretty nice here.

Make sure you post pics when you get the new wheels!

If you drive in NYC, turn off Riverside Dr. at 76th in any car and it will remind you of what you can run into all over the city.

I bent the 16" rim on my explorer in NYC last summer, it blew out the tire too but, some of the streets in the city can be bad. Got on the Henry Hudson out of habbit and it happened on the turn around under GWB from the Henery Hudson to get onto the FDR.

Dude you're car looks awesome... love the clean look of it. Also agree with all of you regarding the NYC roads. I don't want to go thru the same headaches as i did with the 19s on my TL so i just ordered these(below link). I got them for $1.1K with Falken 452's from this shop in Lodi,NJ, where i usually get my wheels from. I'm hoping to be in a new set of shoes by Fri or Sat.

Let me know what you think of these. i got the 18x7.5
Also did not realize how much of a pain the bolt pattern on my 9-3 is.

Our roads are rutted and I think that 235/35/19" wheels with those Rials are "perfect look" but when I have to drive here in Finland, 225/45/17 or 215/45/17 might be the best sizes. Of course 17" looks small in 9-3SS...
But its really stressful to drive if car wont go straight.

If your roads are terrible, just like ours here, and you can't stand a rough ride, then don't get 19's, because your going to get a rough ride. Adding on, our cars dampening setups are... i hate to say crap compared to other cars!

I'm a bit surprised by what I'm hearing. I would have thought that larger wheels would help eliminate the sensation of small bumps, i.e. because the larger wheel would be less apt to "fit into" depressions in the road surface.

Which would be a bumpier ride: a pair of rollerblades with 1" wheels, or a pair of rollerblades with with 4" wheels?

A logical argument, but the larger the wheel diameter, the less rubber there is between the road and the wheel, therefore less dampening effect through the tyres.

+1... And in my case, where I dont want to bend or crack a rim due to the horrible roads, my tires are slightly more infalted for that reason, hence i feel every single hair on the street.

The outer diameter of the wheel remains the same, at least if one is following given laws and regulations.

Yes, thats why I have 215/45 wheels with 17"x8" rims. Earlier I had 224/45 wheels but I changed them to these 215/45 wheels. I also tested 225/40/18 set and my friend said that "of course you have to buy 19" set" ....

Aaah, so what you're talking about are larger rims without changing the outside diameter of the tire....i.e. lower profile tires (like what you'd see on a Porsche 911 Turbo).

I was talking about an overall larger tire. In that case, it'd hide bumps better.

You should always keep the outside tire diameter the same as the car manufacturer specs. If you change the outside diameter, your speedometer will be off if it is not adjusted and you will change the top speed and wheel torque.

What's the desire for 19" wheels? Is it just to look cool or are you planning on taking it out on the Nurnberg Ring?

You usually make the tire sidewall smaller to improve handling but comfort will suffer as mentioned by others.
