high pitched sound when accelerating under load

I have a 2006 93 2.0T.. hirsched. Other than that and my ICE equipment.. car is stock

When driving up mountain roads (steep gradient) with 4 pple in the car.. i downshift to 2nd to accelerate.. upshift to 3rd.. past 3500RPM.. a high pitched sound is emitted by the engine (dont know from which component).

This only happens when going up a steep gradient and past 3500 RPM.

On the highway.. all the way to redline.. no sound.

Any ideas?

Brought it in to the dealer.. could not replicate the sound (no steep gradient slopes long enuff anyway).. tech2 throws no fault codes. I'm going up the same mountain end of the month.. told the dealer i'd take some videos.

It's the turbo. Even my 1.8t which has a very low turbo pressure does it and it is a good thing if you hear it. Your turbo is working! I really love the sound when i drive the car in the snowy Alps with nice curved roads going uphill.

Sounds like turbo whistle- the reason you don't hear it on the highway is probably due to a lack of vegitation or walls for the sound of the car to reflect back to you. Of course, I'm assuming that you have your windows open.

No... windows are up... aircon on... and sound is only present when rpm is PAST 3500

Honestly, its been 2 weeks.. and I cant really recall the sound now.. but i'll be sure to do a recording when i'm on the same route in about 3 weeks.. i just hope there is nothing mechanically wrong

Is it a kind of a whistle whine that comes from Semi Trucks (TIR) or buses, or 3.0D BMW X3's, turbodiesel cars?


If it is, its your turbo...

Nothing to worry about, turbos intend to sound louder after the break-in period or under heavy load. Saab turbos are a little louder than the ones you would hear in vw's and audi...

HAHAHA... unfortunately, I live in Singapore, where there are no mountains... and if caught speeding, i could get into lots of trouble hehe

The 'mountain' i mentioned, is located in malaysia (just across the border).. about 3 hours drive away.. will have to wait till my next trip in 3 weeks.. i'll take videos showing the tachometer and capture the sound (if it comes up again) and post it here and also give everyone an update on what the dealer's feedback is..

the reason why I am concerned is because my last trip was made with a fellow saab driver.. he was driving an '03 2.0t that is with BSR stage 1.. he experienced no such sound..

The first time I heard the "odd sound" was when I was going uphill at that sort of revs. It sounded like the turbo, but with an added whistling, whooshing sound (yes, I know that's what a turbo sounds like, but it was deeper in tone and so much louder and more, I dunno, noticable than the usual high pitched turbo whistle). I heard it a couple more times, each time getting longer than before, until it was blatently obvious on each boost. A few minutes afer it reached that level it ended in a loud bang as it snapped a hose clip and blew the hose off the intercooler inlet.

It may be worth having a check of your hose clips between the turbo and the inlet manifold, just in case there is a weakness in the clips, a leak or some other damage?

I'm gonna bring the car into an independent workshop that specialise in SAABs the week b4 my trip to have them check all hoses/clips that run along the turbo lines

Tyres screeching only at 10 seconds into video. If u think u hear tyres screeching other than at the 10 second-ish mark, its not... its the sound that I am enquiring about.

There were 3 pple in the car (including me).

Btw, what's the penalty for speeding over there. Just read an article yesterday about the new traffic penalties for ppl in Viginia. 20mph over the speed limit could get you a $1000 ticket. The max traffic penalty is $3000 . Reason: The state needs more $ for road construction. Pretty messed up way of raising revenue if you ask me.

Yikes get that checked....using my 900 mindset I immediately thought bad Hootervalve....you don't get that sound on a normal 93.

Problem is I am unable to replicate it at the dealer.

sound only comes on when:

1) Accelerating up steep gradients under full load; and/or
2) At hgher altitudes

No such sound when travelling on straight roads

With this video, I will pay the dealer another visit and see what they say.

Different kind of sound altogether.

penalty for speeding over here in singapore.. hmmm.. we have a demerit point system..

- Exceeding speed limit by up to 20 Km/h - 4 demerit points + $130 fine
- Exceeding speed limit by more than 20 km/h up to 30km/h - 6 demerit points + $150 fine
- Exceeding speed limit by more than 30km/h up to 40km/h - 8 demerit points + $170 fine
- Exceeding speed limit by more than 40km/h up to 50km/h - 12 demerit points + $200 fine + will be prosecuted in court (may be disqualified from driving)
(there are more.. but too lazy to type out)..

if u accumulate more than 24 demerit points over a 2 year period, ur licence will be suspended
