Default Failed MOT -Lamda reading

Hi,
My Dad passed his Saab 9000 CSE on to me last year and I've just put it in for it's MOT. There were a couple of minor things but the main thing is that its failed on the lamda reading. The garage say they've checked a few obvious areas like hole in the exhaust but has said they 'wouldn't know where to start'. It's an old car and to be honest I don't know much at all about cars. I don't want to spend loads on it. However, it would be a shame to get rid of it if its a problem that could be easily fixed.
Ideas, suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers

I don't know much about the foreign cars you drive over there, but I know a hole in the exhaust will affect the Lambda.
Fix the exhaust, get it good and hot on the highway, test it again.

Hey problem, if the exhaust is NOT blowing anywhere, then you could try go down the scrappy, look for a lambda sensor from another 9000. Make sure you check how many wires/colors your has, and get the same one. Won't cost much, and if it works and passes the MOT, your sorted.

if changing the lambda sensor doesnt fix the prob' then you could be looking at a new cat, you could remove it and look inside to see if it is either blockes or has bits missing

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies. Problem is I don't have a clue with cars and wouldn't even know what or where these parts are on the engine. Anyone know someone in South London, I'm in Streatham, who won't charge a fortune and might be able to sort it?
Thanks again for your input.
Steve
