Default Leather

I am having an argument with my bud concerning the leather in my 99'. he thinks it is fake leatherette. Does anyone have solid evidence that it is constructed of genuine leather off a cow?

I don't know about the '99 but I know that in the 00-01 model 9-5s that I have sat in, its the best damn leather I've ever seen. I'd like to know exactly what kind of leather it is.

(now don't tell me its leatherette!!)

It is real leather...if it was the fake stuff it wouldn't smell of leather when you open the door.

They used have the little leather tags under the head-rest, on the 9000's.
With a discription of genuine leather and such.
Haven't seen any on the 9-5, but haven't looked either, I also believe it's real.

It wouldn't have held up as well as it has in my car if it wasn't leather.

Leather was an option on the base model 9-5 and standard on the SE models. That said, I've only seen one or two base models in the US that did not have leather - and they had cloth seats. If it's not cloth, then it's leather.

I've seen MAYBE two 9-5's ever, and never in person, with cloth interiors. Only in 1999, in the USA, I think, was cloth involved. Which was pretty much more of an option NOT to have leather.

The only fake leather is on the back of the seats and sometimes behind where your knees would be, such as on the rear seats. The 9-5 Aero had seats in FULL leather, front and back.

Is your friend used to American or Japanese cars? In my Experiences, American cars use as little leather as possible, and it is what is called "split-grain." The split the leather in two or more, allowing twice the amoung of leather from a single hide. This however is thinner and why American leather cracks so easily/fast(My Dad's 8000 mile Silverado was cracking a bit), and also feels tihnner. European leather/Saab leather is generally "full-grain" leather, and is much nicer, longer-lasting, and durable. You get the textured leather and it is much more supple. IMO, I think Saab leather is the nicest leather I've had the pleasure to sit on. There are a few others right up there, but Saab leather is top notch!!(with the comment about the older cars having a tag, the newer ones don't, but the tag on the older ones said that it was ELMO brand leather, which is expensive but VERY high quality, and I THINK Swedish, ubt I'm not entirely sure.)

You realy got me thinking now...
so I checked the seat but its sealed around the edges.

The large pocket in the back of the front seats dont look like leather as inside the pocket there seems to be a synthetic lining.

However ... I checked the small pocket at the front of the front seat (under your knees, yea I know I'm not describing it well....) The inside of that pocket has the expected leather backing, rough and smelly.

So if you want to hookwink your friend tell him to reach between his legs, slip his hands in to the pocket and feel the quality. But keep him away from your back pockets....

Default It was cow!

All the leather is with lining-thin in the pockets and thick on the seats. It prevent elasticity and prolongs life, mine is bit cracked on drivers seat will replace it in the end of summer, but it is absolutely cows skin-look at the stitches, any synthetic will broke with time there.
The smell can be produced, but long life is attribute of the natural leather only,so don't worry.
