Default Driving the Saab and it Shuts Off

Vehicle : 1997 Saab 900s 2.3L Automatic 98,000 Miles

The Problem : While driving the engine will just shut off. It typically happens after about 15 minutes of driving. No hesitations no jerking, the engine just shuts off, and you can coast it off the roadway. No Codes are thrown. Then you sit for a couple of minutes and the car starts and runs fine for another 15 minutes. If you try and start the vehicle up right away it just turns over but doesn't start. I was able to drive the vehicle until it shut off and quickly hook up a spark tester on the one wire and found that when it shuts off, there is no spark. Then after a couple minutes you crank over the vehicle and it starts and runs for another 15 minutes.

Does this sound like the ignition coil? or could it be another problem? Thanks for any input.

I would look at the ingnition system and also the crank position sensor as well.

Traditionally, fuel failure is gradual, soft ; electric is more sudden, hard..this means a little..

If no CEL, then fuel, as there should be no unused fuel.

The CEL deals with emissions, not the engine performance(directly), or even if it is running....
The fuel pump is good for 100 to 200K miles...it depends on the CPS... .. and the fuel pump relay.Many threads on this.
This problem can be diagnosed with accuracy...

I'd cut the missing fuel pump access door; a little project that I must do this spring..

Sounds identical to the thread I posted a week or so ago. I changed the CPS with a second hand part, renewed all the vaccum hoses(nice and red silicon ones), fitted a new fuel filter and also changed the fuel pump relay. You've guesssed it's still cutting out.

Tried a new test this afternoon when I disconnected the idle air control and it ticked over no problem(I never took it for a drive though) but when I reconnected it the car cut out. I'm assuming the idle control is on the left hand side looking from the front atached to the throttle body.

I can get one from ebay for 20 and was wondering if it is worth changing it or is it a deeper problem - sorry for hijacking the thread but it is a related question

I was having the exact same problem on my 900s with 2.3, replaced the CPS and it's been great since (crankshaft position sensor) its easy to do

oh I forgot to mention, mine has almost identical mileage, I did notice at the time that mine had no spark as well when it wouldnt start, so it does control spark too it seems
