how many gallons to fill?

Ok, here's my question. the gas light comes on; i check the DTE and it says 35mi; I head for a service station; fill it up and put in 15 gallons. If specs say my tank is 18.5 gallons does that mean that i wouldn't really run out in 35 miles or that the entire tank is not usable??

how much of your tank do you use between fill-ups?

I've gotten the pump to read between 17 and 18.

I've also found that my 9-5 doesn't need to be topped off. After the automatic shut off, it's pretty much full. On my other car (Mazda Protege), I can sneak in 3 or more gallons if I am slow about it.

I dont recommend trying.. but one time my DTE read 0 Miles and I managed to make it 3 or so to the nearest gas station without any stuttering at all, being very light on the pedal mind you. I filled it up, to the shutoff, and it read just shy of 18 gallons. I typically keep her around a half tank(Don't want to be too heavy, right? ), but these were odd circumstances.

The DTE milage varies a lot depending on what type of driving you have been doing, and the Saab computer seem to switch the DTE around quite a bit. I'm used to the computer DTE output on Chrysler Minivans, which does not change as often, and also leaves a reserve for you when the DTE goes to 0.

I had 'er running on empty (reads 0 miles) before too, and got 8miles out of that until I reached a filling station.

Won't do it again given choice though.

Got 77.29 litres in the tank yesterday. That's 20.42 US gallons or 17 UK (Imperial) gallons. SID was still showing 3 miles to go.

Target: 80 litres

What car were you driving that has a tank that holds over 20 gallons?

I have put 17.5 gallons in a few times with the DTE reading 20 miles.
