I assume the ball goes on top of the spring. Close to the elbo, since both these items flew out. If the ball was under the spring I don't think it would have came flying out. For conversation sake, lets say the 90* elbo is the top of the thing.
if it is a "dual ball" type mbc (joe p, hallman, etc), then a small ball goes at the bottom of the spring (this one acutally does the restricing) and another similar ball at the top of the spring, where it comes in contact with the screw adjustment. the second ball is there for two reasons: 1) keeps the screw threads from engaging the spring itself and binding and 2) prevents the MBC from bleeding boost pressure signal to atmosphere if the adjustment screw is lost. this is important if you want to avoid overboosting.
