I have read various walkthroughs for installing those front door speakers on my '97 900S, but I have a problem I haven't found a solution for:
There is some kind of tube going from the door which I was led to believe contained various wires for central locking, power window and such. When I opened it, I found that it only contained a big plug with lots of connectors. I don't think it is possible to fit a speaker wire in that tube.
In other words, I am in trouble. I have searched the door but I cannot find any loose wires that could be ment for the door speakers.
So. What to do? I have a car that lies in pieces. Should I sell my component speakers and buy some small front speakers to replace those lousy cardboard speakers in the front or should I give it another go?
You cant really use the wiring gaitors and most sites advise you to drill two holes,1 in the door and the other in the bulkhead,so as to pass the speaker wire through.
This to me seems a little drastic and if you get the drilling wrong you can make a huge mess!!!!!!!!!!
I managed to untwist the gaitors from the door and bulkhead and then pass the speaker wire through and then refit the gaitors.....a little on the fiddly side but well worth the extra time and effort..........
Largo, you're correct on the wires: it's all the electrics for the door. AFAIK there is no such thing as a door speaker amp, if there is an amp at all then it's on the passenger side in the footwell behind the carpeting, and feeds all 4 speakers. i THINK that unless you have a model which already HAS door speakers, there is no amp other than the one built in to the head unit. could be wrong on that part though.
i took the same route as Scanny when putting speakers in the doors of my '95 900S. split the speaker wire so the + and - were seperated, undid the coupling, and fed the wires up through the door, through the gaiter, out one end of the coupling, then back in the other part of the coupling (making sure of course those holes you chose line up when it's together!!), then through the gaiter on the inside of the car, and, in my case, back to an aftermarket amp i had behind the rear seats. or they could go straight to the head unit, or to the amp on the passenger side if you have one. repeat that for the other wire and then the other door, and you're set :cheesy:
a little time consuming, but as Scanny noted, definitely worth it! Makes for a nice clean install job while keeping door seals etc intact.
you should also DEFINITELY replace the little ones in the dash, regardless of what else you do. the stock ones are trash!

That's exactly where the amp is. Confused. You say there is no amp and then pinpoint it exactly?!? :cheesy:
The (american) S model has 4 speakers and no amp. The (american) SE has six and an amp in the footwell to power the woofers in the door. Technically it is a door speaker amp.
Last part is correct.
Thanks guys, you have given me renewed faith in this project I thought was dead and buried.
FYI, my norwegian Saab 900S 1997 has got four stock speakers and no extra amp. I think the extra amp goes with the stock door speakers, if the original owner selected the audio system that provided six speakers (900SE?).
By the way, is it a decent solution to glue the speakers to the doors? I am more than a little reluctant to drill holes in the door. And where to place the crossovers?
