Default Intermittant fuel pump and fuel gauge reads low

I have a '97 900 XS with a 2.0l non turbo engine.

For the last month or so the fuel gauge has read too low. When full it reads about 2/3 full and seemingly varies at random after that. I thought it was all a bit hard (and expensive) to replace the FP assembly so I started monitoring the mileometer and filling after about 250 miles.

But yesterday, the 900 died on a customer's driveway with no fuel pumping. When the AA came and sprayed starting fluid into the inlet duct it started after some effort and then drove home.

I have a theory that the problem might be the relay rather than the pump since the earlier problem with the fuel reading level. Anyone have a view on this?

As always, I'm grateful for any input to the problems this car finds to keep me occupied.

Doug

Even as they share the same housing, there is no relationship between the FP(fuel pump) and the level transmitter.
A better test of the FP is to tap the tank with a mallet...if this vibration causes the FP to run again.......
If the FP is original - renew it.
The relays seem to last forever.....whatever that means.

OK - Thank you for that. I was hoping for a low difficulty fix but it looks as if I'll have to bite the bullet and get on with it.

I'll try the mallet job as well to see if I can move it somewhere more convenient for working on it.

Thanks again.

Doug
