Default OH S*#% moments

Saw it on another forum I visit for my other car which is getting an engine swap (1988 iroc camaro) basically post detailed info about near crashes, crashes or any moment where saying "OH S*#% just wasn't enough or where maybe because you bought a Saab is the way it turned out that it did. I will start, I was driving my 2001 Saab 93 just filled it up with gas and decided to drive over the mountain instead of around to save time and to beat this punk kid who said his Honda did 100 up the mountain and me disliking Honda had to try it. it was around 1A.M and I drove up the mountain the other direction earlier but before that I never drove up this side of the mountain, well there's a hairpin turn right where i started to accelerate and i launch going about 45 around the hairpin. no cars where on the mountain and id say its between half a mile or less till the top, surprisingly I got it up to 110 when i saw the sign to slow down for the turn ahead :O i saw a car come around the turn and it was probably about close to 20-50 yards away well lets just say i stood on those brakes till i came to the hairpin at the top and was doing around 40 this one is sharper so i turned off the turn into a parking lot and sat there for about an hour letting my brakes cool and thinking how close i came. to that day i never went up the mountain again. I had brake dust on my brake for about a week till i got it off here are some pictures of the kids Honda.

Hondas can handle surprisingly well.. provided they are not overboosted and only made to go straight or part of the "stanced" fad

One VERY early morning(2-3am) I was driving round with a friend. I was ripping down some country roads in one of my C900s. There was a rather sharp curve that I forgot about...

To put the story short, I locked up the brakes(no ABS in the early c900s) and managed to take the turn, and stay on the road. I was highly impressed at the handling for such an old car, and bad tires. From then on, I started driving more safely. I've lost multiple friends to car crashes.

Many moons ago I had to change location of my project Stag. Early one winter morning (less coppers about) I drove it from A to B. Around half a mile from B I overteered on the snow/ice into a ditch smashing the front left corner. Luckily a farmer just happened to drive past in his tractor so pulled me out quickly before any coppers could nab for driving without insurance and registration.
Project then took a little longer than expected.

I have a pretty good one...this was a couple years in my 9-5 on my way home from having lunch with some family.

So, I'm on 64 in Louisville when I see a white van on the side of the road. Keep in mind I'm doing about 65-70 at the start of all this. The van is far enough off the road that I don't need get over (my mistake, I always do now), but out from around this van, a guy starts to step into the road in front of my car. I have an "oh s^*+" moment and swerve into the next lane where there is a ladder laying in the middle of the road. This whole time there was a Volvo V50 right behind me, I slam the brakes and swerve back into my original lane trying to miss the ladder and the dude walking into the road at the same (at this point he's jumping out of the way) the Volvo locks his brakes and starts to slide a bit sideways coming at me, so I freaking punch it, the Volvo regains control and we get back underway. All this took about 20 seconds tops, but it was scary. Lol.

All you have to do is drive in the D/M/V area on a daily basis and you can run into an "oh ****" moment almost every week, if not daily. People here drive like buttheads most of the time - I've seen semis go from the very left lane to the very right lane because they weren't paying attention and needed to exit. I've seen people just STOP in their lane to figure out where they are going or to figure out if they need to turn/exit (they've never heard of pulling over and coming back around if need be).

Latest "oh sh$t" moment was about a week ago when a guy was going thru an intersection on a green light, and just STOPPED (DC plates), no signal, and decided he had to turn left - luckily my wife's stock brakes on her 9-3 worked wonders.

When I was in 19 or so I was doing about 80 (speed limit was 45 or so ...MPH...AMERICA!!) in my accord on a back road with a buddy up in maine (where I'm from). It was about 9PM and completely dark out. I grew up on those roads so I was pretty familiar with the curves and hills. Well, something I couldn't account for were moving objects...I came up on a blind hill which was followed by a steep dip in the road. As we rounded the top of the hill I saw a dark shape on our side of the road, it just looked like a shadow at first...well as I approached at an alarming rate it became clear that the shadow was actually a massive bull moose just chilling in my lane. Without a single word from either of us (my friend and I, not the moose, he wasn't bullwinkle) I gently shifted to the left lane (oncoming traffic, luckily we were the only headlights on the road at that time) around the moose and back into the right lane. Approximately 6 seconds went by, and then we both screamed like little girls.

I don't think I've had a proper "Oh $#!?!!!" moment and luckily no where close to one in my Saab. lol. I have spun out twice, well three times, in my Altima.

First one was me goofing around on a dirt road avoiding pot holes and my car did a 180. Second one it was raining and I did a little over a 360. Luckily everyone stopped in both directions for like 200 feet. I was sooo embarrassed.

Worst moment for causing expletives to happen for me was the only big accident I've been involved in so far.

60mph main road, crossroads of a minor road in front of me, I'm on the main road doing 55ish in my old Skoda 130GL. See gas tanker coming down the side road, slow right down...then speed up again. Have quite enough time to do the maths and realise that we're going to connect - but nowhere near enough time to do anything about it. Had enough time to brace and get my foot onto the brake pedal before ploughing into the nearside front of the cab, spinning around in a circle three times before coming to a halt in the middle of the road in a cloud of tyre smoke.

Walked away with two scraped knuckles from the indicator and windscreen wiper stalks and a bruise from the seatbelt. Tanker ended up with a chassis shaped like a banana apparently too.

Count myself lucky to have walked away from it - still gutted to have lost the car though, it was a minter save for needing a good polish and the vinyl roof re-done.

Mine was an OH F*** moment..

This past winter we had a VERY warm day and of course I was driving on snow tires in my c900 Commed just after it had rained, around 9 pm. Decided to go down one of my favorite back roads on my way home, which has trees and ditches on either side of the entire road. Took a right just after a small downhill a little too fast and lost the rear end, did about 2 1/2 spins before I was able to regain control, just missed going off the road, down a ditch, and into some trees on the opposite side of the road.

Intrax and Koni Adjustables certainly don't mean jack on snow tires in warm wet weather.

Wasn't really an "Oh F***" moment. Maybe it was, don't recall a great deal. Older members would have seen these pics a bunch. I was really smashed after closing the kitchen after a busy night at a resort I was chef at. Downed a few pints and then ripped into the best part of a bottle of single malt. I do recall that it was Glenmorangie weirdly enough .

I vaguely recall losing control and then letting the wheel go and letting fate take it's course. Hard lesson

Cuba, I sure it hurts you more than me, but that car, that Alfa is a "single malt" in the auto world. They have skyrocketed in price over here.

Poor Alfa ... but you're ok.

Me? Left my gals house after an argument and a two beers. It rained and I had just traded my 65 Corvette on a 67 Mustang. The Vette handled very well but that night I found out exactly what "light in the rear" meant. After the first spin I heard a loud noise and then saw a small blue spruce coming that I flattened.

With the rain beating down, I settled down and took stock. I had a skinned knuckle, just a scratch that would, a few days later go "septic" and almost kill me (dark lines up my arm), but the engine was running well and things didn't appear that bad but I would have to pay the fellow for the tree on his lawn.

All bets were off when I put the car in gear and it didn't move. Once I got out to look things over I realize how lucky I had been. Behind me, a telephone pole was cut in half (the loud noise), and the rear axle had taken all of the force; a few inches fore or aft and the car would have been torn in half and the tank ripped open.

I was also pizzed at my girls Dad, a Ford dealer, who sold me on that POS Mustang as "his secretary's car" and never been in an accident. The whole drivers side was replacement fenders and door skin. Lying snake of a car dealer all the time he was getting me to call him "Dad" hoping to pawn "sweet cheeks" off on me I guess.

I had a literal "Oh S#*+" moment the other day. (I actually said it out loud)...

I was driving this girl home, and I pulled up to a flashing stop-light trying to make a left turn onto the main highway (around here that's just a two-laner! ) A guy I know pulls up next to me in his giant old Caddy that I couldn't really see around, but right before he pulled up the road was clear...so I thought. So I start to pull out and luckily I look over to my right one more time, and see a loaded down Mack coming into the intersection about 30 feet away from the side of my car. I FLOORED it, tires screamed, and I saw my tach hit 6k. I looked up in my mirror to see how close the truck was and I could see my license plate number in his chrome bumper...so he was probably about three feet off. I keep the pedal down until I'm doing about 80, then I realize I was far enough ahead. lol To my surprise, the girl with me was not in an all-out terror and actually said to me a couple minutes down the road, "As scary as that was....it was pretty fun." Totally worth it. (Not really)

Then the next day I was almost hit head-on by a new Focus that ran off the road then over corrected....I'm getting a little freaked out.

You can go years without any type of near misses, then bang - you have a string of them, one after another. Just one of those things I suppose but it does shake your faith in your driving ability.

My wife's Russian friend had just emigrated to Australia and had her "L" plates. My wife talked me into giving her a few lessons. We hop into her car and my wife starts talking Russian to this girl. We had not gone 300 metres when a STOP sign appeared. Still chatting away in Russian, I reminded the girl about the fast approaching STOP sign. Instinctively, I started appling the brakes but sitting in the passenger seat it had no impact. We sailed straight through the STOP sign and thankfully hit no one.

"Pull the car over" I said immediately as I berated both ladies for chatting and not listening to me. When I stated that we all could have been killed, the Russian girl responded "Its OK, I only got the car blessed by the Russian Orthodox priest last week". Never have been very religious!

Where do you live? I thought Oklahoma drivers were bad... If it rains, like mist or a sprinkle even, they slow to 30+ below.

Well you better start. You will probably need it for the duration of her stay.
