Ok, like the title says my car runs really rough below 2K rpm or so (maybe a little bit higher). It's not just when the car is moving, it's also when it's stationary and in neutral. When I'm moving - let's say I'm in 1st gear - I'll give it some gas and let out the clutch, being shaken to death the whole time, and then it will slowly go forward still shaking like the dickens until it hits ~2000 RPM, at which point it takes off imediately.
The only things that I've done recently was change the oil and air filter a day or two before it started behaving like this. I'm going out to poke around right now, see if I dislodged anything, it just gives me comfort to know that I have you smart guys out there helping me so it's not just me and my dumb brain by ourselves:cheesy:.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: There is also a fuel smell in the cabin - it's not there when the car's been sitting for a while, it appears whenever I'm driving hard (up a hill, giving it some juice on the freeway, etc.) - the smell might or might not be related, either way if I don't fix it I'll have my mechanic look at it when I go in for safety and emissions.
Alright, I didn't find any vac hoses off or anything too obvious like that. I checked the IC connections and adjusted a couple of them. Didn't make any difference - it's still shuddering.
However, I did discover something interesting. When I blip the throttle from inside the engine compartment I can hear a sound that is best described as blowing air over a glass bottle. You know, like how red necks used to "play the jugs"? Blow over the top of an upright bottle and you get a deep, hollow, airy sound. That's what this sounds like:cheesy:.
It occured to me that this probably doesn't corrispond to the fuel smell thing that I cited before, but rather with my lack of boost. I'm only getting about 3/4 of the way into the yellow at best. I probably just need to re-do all connections that would affect the turbo and check for leaks on those....
spark lead grounding out? loose dist. cap . if the car ran fine before you "fixed it"it leads me to belive something happened while you were under the hood. look for simple stuff first.
The shaking is most noticeable when the car is in neutral and when I'm in 1st gear. Still noticeable in the other gears, but not really a problem since I can keep it above 2K RPM once I get out of 1st.
Follow each and every hose from end to end, large and small, by feel if necessary, to make sure nothing has been dislodged. Check the plugs to see if only one cylinder is involved.
I checked all of the hoses that I could see and couldn't find any that were dislodged. I was all excited when I discovered a pipe from the airbox to the IC that was a bit off, so I fixed that - no difference. Then, I checked all the spark plug leads and the dist. cap, finding that one of the plug leads was a bit off I adjusted that - still no difference.
I remember when I was changing the air filter that there was kinda this weird gasket between the two different...I dunno, sections of the distributor/air-box assembly. Maybe that got folded somewhere, creating a leak? Any more ideas?
Not that this is even remotely the problem with your car, but I had a problem with smells in the cabin, really rough idle that smoothed out at high RPM's, and a sort of hissing/whistling sound. It turned out to be the gasket between the fuel injector assembly and the head, particluarly near cylinder 1 so i was running on only 3. Found the leak by hitting throttle to locate the hiss and spraying carb cleaner around everywhere. (that was after I had replaced every single hose and grommet and still had a lean code) getta can of carb cleaner and start spraying! But you might want to check each plug for spark first.
Pull the air filter and make sure nothing got lodged on the engine side of it - the strong fuel smell is probably you running really rich - you didn't - perhaps - install the air filter WITH A celophane wrapper still on it, did you? (I'm not trying to be cruel or nasty - in the heat of battle we've all made simple mistakes - have we not??)
