...is MISSING! There is no dipstick on this car, just a plug (much like the oil drain plug) that goes in the hole where the dipstick tube would screw in. Why? Don't tell me that Saab did this from the factory...it must have broken and a garage just slapped in something else?
No this is correct,
transmissions from 89 onwards iirc dont have dipsticks because as far as Saab is concerned the transmission is sealed for life :roll:
There is however a dipstick on the underside of the transmission fill bolt.
I beleive you can swap the whole cover plate from the 88, but what's the point? just check the trans fluid once a year with the bolt... there is no need to check it more often so long as it's not leaking.
I was thinking of trying to change the transmission oil (probably gonna swap in Honda MTL to save the pinions), and adding oil through that bolt way down there will be a huge pain in the neck. So...if I could swap in the regular dipstick, then I could check it everyonce in a while much more conveniently, and I wouldn't have to get way down into the engine bay in order to add fluid.
