Gas Gauge flicker/erratic

The gas gauge needle on my 2001 9-3 flickers and acts erratic at times. Even with a full tank of gas it at times shows empty and other times with an almost empty tank it shows full. I am wondering if this is an electronic problem or could it be the float in the gas tank that is faulty. Any suggestions?

Most likely the sending unit in the tank. What's the mileage on the car?

I guess that really doesn't matter... I'm still thinking sending unit which is part of the fuel pump on this car.

Well, yes and no.
The FP is available (thanks to after-market) as a separate piece.
Its hard to determine if the problem is mechanical or electronic....as this has happened to me in the past...but not recently...and I think the problem is electronic, not in the level transmitter.....which, IMO, can be fixed.
Sometimes a fuel cleaner compound may work to clean varnish from the contacts in the tank.
