Default Train hits Saab in snow storm

Luckily nobody was in the car when it happened.

From Newsday:

Quote:
The Long Island Rail Road is adding four afternoon trains out of Penn Station on Thursday to help people returning home from work early because of the winter storm.
The LIRR also announced that it is restoring some limited service on its Huntington and Port Jefferson lines, where service was suspended east of Hicksville earlier because of the snow.
The four extra afternoon trains include three on the Babylon branch, beginning with a 2:33 p.m. express train, and a 3:41 Port Washington train.
Trains will run hourly between Hicksville and Huntington, and every two hours between Huntington and Port Jefferson. The railroad said it may cancel some westbound trains on the Port Jefferson branch Thursday evening "to give us more flexibility."
"We continue to see higher accumulations on Huntington branch," the LIRR said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, a woman whose car was struck by a LIRR train in Greenlawn mistakenly drove onto the tracks during the snowstorm because she thought it was a road, a railroad official said.
Phyllis Morrow of Oakdale was driving a 2003 Saab south on Lake Road when, thinking she was making a right onto Pulaski Road, she turned onto the tracks, the LIRR said. The visibility was poor at the time due to the heavy falling snow, the railroad said.
Seeing the stranded vehicle, a passerby urged Morrow to move to a safe area moments before the car was hit by the westbound 7:36 a.m. train from Port Jefferson, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority police said.
A railroad spokesman said there were about 500 passengers aboard the train, but none were injured. Morrow also was not hurt in the crash.
The accident, which occurred at about 8:20 a.m., forced the suspension of service on the single-track Port Jefferson branch between Port Jefferson and Huntington for about one hour and 20 minutes. Service was later suspended again on the branch due to snow accumulation.
Railroad officials said commuters can expect disruptions again for the evening rush.
"We're monitoring conditions very closely," railroad spokesman Joe Calderone said, noting that if accumulations reach the benchmark 10-to-13-inch range, service may have to be suspended.
He said the railroad also is advising customers to use "extra caution" on platforms, saying that despite their best efforts, maintenance crews are having difficulty keeping up with a storm of this severity.

Hard to tell from the picture, but it appears to have taken the hit pretty well considering what hit it! That said, really glad the driver wasn't in it. That would have hurt for sure.
