Exclamation HELP! Sputtering and almost no power, now won't start

I was driving home today and filled up the gas tank at a Liberty. Put premium 93 in and got back on the road, within less than a mile the car starts sputtering and I have a hard time keeping it from stalling, having to almost floor it just to get to limp into a parking lot. Popped the hood to check oil(as i've had a slow leak), coolant, etc. everything was fine. I get back in to restart it and on the first couple tries it would barely start, sputter for a few seconds, then die. I let it sit and now it will crank but doesn't even try to start. It's the normal noise when I try to start it, nothing funny.

I have fairly limited knowledge as I'm still learning but have two theories.

1)I ran the tank down to almost empty(gas light on). Possibly I stirred up some dirt in the bottom of the tank when filling up and now the fuel filter is clogged.

2) A guy stopped by who also drive's a 9-5. I told him what happened and he said his (2003 9-5) had a bad thermostat that caused the exact symptoms I was describing and he had to lit his sit to completely cool before he could start it again.

I drove the car earlier today with no problems (maybe 5 or 6 miles round trip) The engine was also at full operating temp when this happened. Also I'm in VA, it's the warmest day we've had yet this spring, it got up to 80F. Haven't driven in any weather yet this year with temps above 60 or so.

I could be completely off here on my ideas. Anyone encountered something like this? Any ideas? I'm getting it towed in the morning and would like to have an idea of what might be wrong before talking to a mechanic.

fold the back seat up and lift up the carpet to the fuel access hole and see if the fuel pump is turning on when you key the car on and when cranking.

also common would be crank position sensor which most people will probably tell you. The proper way to test it would be with a scope and also to see if you are getting an rpm signal to the ecu with a scanner but most people dont have these tools so they just replace the CPS based on its common failures

sorry i'm a little confused on the exact location of the fuel pump. do you mean fold the rear seat down? then lift up the carpet in the trunk?

Sounds like it could be the CPS ( crank postion sensor) car stops when warm runs poorly will not restart till it cools.

Never heard a thermostat doing that

so i went back to the liberty I bought the gas at after having a little nagging feeling about the gas I bought. My thoughts were that there may have been water in it. Well it wasn't five gallons of premium that went into my car, but five gallons of diesel... the pumps we're not marked right, and for some reason the diesel pump fit right into my car. I thought they were supposed to be larger than the gasoline ones?

Anyway, got it towed to a local indy shop. Getting the tank, fuel lines, and injectors all cleaned out. I'm hoping nothing is damaged, as the car only went about a half mile before I shut it off.

I'm thinking I'll be adding some gas treatment for the next few tanks. Any other things I should be aware of or concerned about after this?
