Tata snares Jag, Land Rover


So The Blue Oval now has Volvo as its sole premium "foreign" brand (PAG is essentially dead). Interestingly is the same setup across town in Detroit, where GM has Saab as its sole premium Euro brand. So in a way, now we're gonna see true mano-a-mano competition with Ford.

Well Jag and Rover are now as good as dead. Can't say I'm terribly upset, not like they made cars worth owning anyways.

I am personally bummed out with the Fordification (ruining) of Land Rover. Ford Killed Rover and now Tata is going to bury them into the mainstream likes of IFS/IRS, computerized, and luxury based off-road crap.

As an owner of multiple old school proper landrovers (a series 2A and a 101), i think that landrover have been going downhill for ages with their concentration on the luxury stuff and the ignoring of the utility vehicles that built their reputation. I cant see them getting any worse!

I see more new tata trucks round here than new landrover defenders so it could be a good thing!

It seems to me that Jag built some nice cars under Ford, better than under BL anyway..... Quality was pretty good and the styling was still unique. I guess we will have to see what the Indians do with it.

Not mad.... just in need of cash. The last 10 years or so have not been kind to the "big three" since they built crap cars while the Japanese (and eventually Koreans) built good ones. To top it off the SUV and truck sales are not where they used to be so they need to tighten their belts.

Agreed. There are many in the US who share this opinion. Unfortunately it appears that Jeep is listening to the the Rover market more than Rover is..LOL.

But unfortunately all current Chrysler products still lag far behind in interior appearance and perception of quality.

I think my Landy would go more places than most pimped up chelsea tractors.
It is 20 years old with a TDI 300 engine in it from a LR Disco. All these soft roaders like the Jeeps, Suzukis, Honda's, Nissans and what not are useless off road. The Land Rover series 1 to 3 and the Defender range are in my opinion the best world over and most of the worlds population first time ever seeing a car will be a Land Rover fact.

those jeep libertys are crap! i know you were talkin about a commander but you put pictures of a liberty and every liberty i been in was crap. interior small not much space like youd think (and im a lil guy) very plain and drove like crap, very boring very slow, i didnt find one thing i liked about those libertys. my dad who gets rental cars all the time due to a travelling job also hates them. he isnt picky when it comes to whatever the company gives him but thats one of the cars he will avoid at all costs if he can.

I think LR knows that offroad utility is no longer it's target market. The luxury and rap/hiphop-video crowd with 29" polished chrome rims are the current market segement....and they now taylor their cars to that market b/c thats where the money is. Fourwheel drive offroad enthusiasts don't make much money for LR b/c they usually buy the cars used, keep them for many years, service them on their own (outside dealer), and buy aftermarket parts. This = no money for LR after the initial sale. The luxury-type "I don't know how to use a screwdriver" customer is much more profitable. Folks that I call "checkbook mechanics".

It'll be interesting to see what occurs with Volvo/Ford with the new full-line of Volvo's coming out this year. The new XC70/S60/V70 are all based on the Ford 500 (Taurus) platform, but initial reviews seem positive.

I owned one LR product (see RR below) and would never buy one again. It never went a day without a problem, and parts are hellaciously expensive. Hopefully they can improve with time the way Jaguar has.

Also, I can't believe anyone thinks ANY current Jeep product is nice, good, or worth owning. My gosh, my 3 year old son could design a better looking car. Very gawky, harsh angles and parts that don't seem to fit together...all plastic tupperware bolted to the outside, and just about NO ground clearance on any models. Made for the mall parking lot, not even a smooth dirt road! (IMHO, of course).

I only said I like the styling of them, nothing about how they perform as I've never driven one.
