Unhappy Clunky downshifts after transmission fluid change

Gents,

Last week my Saab went in for the 4yr/80,000km service, and they changed the transmission fluid.

Now I am experiencing the following:

When I put foot while doing 60kmh, the car downshifts two gears, but the gear changes are loud and clunky. This never used to happen before.

This gearbox clunk is really noticeable when driving uphill.

Yesterday I set the CC to 100kmh, and then slowed down to 60kmh on a long uphill. When I pressed resume, the car tried to downshift, but all that happened was a series of clunks, almost as if every time the car went down to 3rd, the gears were slipping back up into 4th.

It was scary to say the least. Any ideas?

Also, what is the spec of the gearbox oil in the 6-speed auto?

Ouch! What kind of shop did the work?

The auto trans oil is JWS 3309, also known as Toyota Type IV fluid.

Sounds like it is time to drain and refill. The DIY section has a helpful thread for this.

It's still under maintenance plan, work was done by the Saab/GM dealer.

I spoke to a couple of indies, they say they use ATF Dextron 3 or Dextron 6 without any issues.

Some further research is leading me to think this is the Valve Body issue on the Aisin gearbox itself, see http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/jm...sb08-24-01.pdf, which describes exactly what I am experiencing!

Yeah, if it is, I will have to convince them that it is indeed this fault and that it can be fixed.

The 2.8T/Aisin combo uses AW-1 fluid, so if your dealer put the wrong kind in, your problem probably starts there.

Hmm, could be. But I haven't even driven 300km since the transmission fluid change.

Besides, I spoke to the former Saab chief mechanic from the stealer, he says they use ATF Dexron 3 which GM recommends.

Where does GM specify the Dexron 3? The spec is AW-1. Show them the manual and specs. I'd have them do a full drain and fill several times to get rid of the Dexron fluid.
The wrong fluid could cause your shifting issues however the valve bodies can go bad as well like that TSB you posted states.

I've searched the manual (pdf) and found no reference to AW-1? Does anyone have a workshop manual that states this spec?

I've called all the Saab workshops in SA - they all use a GM-branded Dexron 6 ATF for the Saab, Cadillac, and Hummers with auto boxes.

now what?
