Lost my key!

I lost one of the key fobs to my 2005 9-3 and now I am down to only one. Quick question: How much would it be to replace it? Do I need to (it is a leased vehicle)?
Did a search on the forum and saw it costs $800-$1200 to replace the whole system? Is this true? Hope I dont need to go that route. Thanks.

You only have to go the $800 route if you were to lose that second key fob. Reason being is that to program a new key fob you must present them with a working fob linked to your car. I just got a new key fob at the dealer a couple days ago and it cost me $60 (that was without the metal key part, just the fob). It will cost more to get the metal key cut (they have to send out for that). Shelling out $800ish would SUCK if you lost your last key.

I've never leased a car, so I'm not sure if that would change anything. Good luck!

Did the dealer charge to reprogramm your new key and old ones?

It was just one new key fob programing, and no they didnt charge me anything. Don't know if they cut me a deal or maybe becuase it literaly takes them a couple of minutes.

The quick answer is YOU GO ASAP IF NOT SOONER TO GET A NEW KEY.

Whether it be $60 or $100 do it now before it costs you 10 times that.

In addition to the entire system replacement cost, imagine being somewhere where you locked your car with the key inside or lost the key altogether. You would need to have the car towed to the dealer or have a professional have it unlocked. Or perhaps break a window. From what I have read on the forum, the 9-3s can be quite difficult to break into without doing any damage. Perhaps have a third metal key made and hide it somewhere on the car just in case you lock the key inside, regardless how many spare keys you have at home.

I've never leased a vehicle either but I suspect that when you turn the car in, they're going to want two keys. If you don't have them both, they will probably charge you for the second one at that time. In other words, you'll likely end up buying one sooner or later. Do as David said, go get another ASAP!

Yes get another complete FOB/metal key ASAP. If U managed to 'lose' the only FOB U have, u r in deep trouble and will cost u a max. I myself made a third FOB. Make sure that when U have the car reprogrammed to bring ALL yr FOBs with U or it will b same as like U lost all yr keys exceot the one that went in the program.

What is cost? so we have a little negotiating power....my dealer charges 53 for a key and reprograms at no charge. I've heard of some Dealers charging 100 plus

cost is what it cost us to get the part in this case the key :-)
