another post, I know. I'm sorry

I have a 1989 900 Turbo 16v. On some documents, it has an S, other not. Is there a list of chassis number or a definitive way of finding out which I have?

I do hope it's not something b****y obvious, like a boot badge!!! lol!!

jim_mcghee 11-07-02 09:51 PM

hello
as far as I know, it is what is in the log book, thats all that counts.
is there an S in that?

jim_mcghee 11-07-02 10:35 PM

that is brilliant Simon, thanx, just checked mine out, all matches, amazing.

Halcyon 11-07-02 10:41 PM

Blimey! Cheers again Simon!
I now know that it's this engine: L = Turbo, B202 & intercooler (16-valve)
And it was made here: 7 = Nystad, Finland!!!

Fancy that!

But alas, I can't find the V5  !!

As far as im aware T16S is the British equivalent of the Aero model offered in some European countries and Australia.
The T16S was a full turbo with Aero body kit fitted- ie the grey side panels, rear spoiler and 15" aero 3 spoke wheels and sports suspension, the normal T16 had the full turbo engine but no Aero side panels or Aero wheels.
Therefore if youve got the bodykit, wheels and suspension then youve got a T16S regardless of what it says on the log book!!!

Pete.

corrct me if I'm wrong but isn't it rare to find a Finnish made Saab in the U.K. as per Halcyons 900?

Halcyon 12-07-02 12:42 PM

Ok, so no body-kit, so I guess no "S". That's cool if all I'm missing is a few bits of plastic!! lol

I have no idea, are UK, Finnish built 900's rare??

Andrew Williams 13-07-02 12:00 AM

My 900 carlsson was also made in Nystad, Finland.

jim_mcghee 13-07-02 12:54 AM

me too, my saab 900i was made in finland too

MEL 13-07-02 01:17 AM

finland here as well
oh and a valmet badge under the bonnet

Alex 13-07-02 01:53 PM

I think all converibles are Finnish, or atleast those of certain ages. The 2dr T16S are also from Finland.

Halcyon 13-07-02 02:42 PM

so in answer to my question,
"no, Finnish Saabs aren't that rare"

MattC 13-07-02 08:26 PM

I have been told that Saab 900's built in either Sweden or Finland have a superior build quality over the other, generally speaking, but I can't remember which was supposedly better.

Has anyone else heard of this and, if so, which is considered to be superior ?

kemosaabey 14-07-02 12:38 AM

Well saab also had a factory in belgium once chunrning out 99's.. can you say RUST??

Going on my 99 experiences, the early trollhattan built cars seem more solid and rust free, but this could be because saab cheapened the 99 by the end. (all late model 99's were finnish built)

Finnish 900's though seem pretty good, in the case of the c900 only 2-door sedans and convertibles were produced.

Halcyon 14-07-02 08:30 PM

Not all, mine is a 3 door hatchback, not the 2 door sedan/saloon.

900 16v 15-07-02 10:25 AM

In Finland they have built Saab 9000s(all models)C900s(all models incl.4 and 5door)96s,95s?,99s,9-3s and of course all the convertibles...the current 9-3 5door is built in Nystad Finland now too but that is only for the Scandinavian market.

V.J.S 15-07-02 10:38 AM

Well, here comes my two cents on the quality issue...I really can't say much about the Trollhättan build quality, but the factory in Finland (Uusikaupunki is the finnish name, Nystad in swedish, if someone cares) is also building Porsche Boxsters as we "speak", and the Germans are usually ridiculously demanding on quality standards (IMO sometimes to the point where it's more of a pain in the *** than a quality issue). I can't remember where my late c900 -83 turbo was built, but my present c900 -85 has a Valmet badge under bonnet (and SAAB SUOMESTA sticker on the rear window...), and the interior and exterior is in FAR more better condition than in my previous car. The difference can mostly be in how the car's had been treated before I got them, though...

V.J.S 16-07-02 12:46 PM

I found a copy of the report that I made to the police when my previous car was stolen, and checked the VIN code, just to find out that I had a model year 1984 instead of the -83 I was sold and lived happily with. And it was assembled in Uusikaupunki Finland, so...build quality issue remains "unsolved"

900 16v 17-07-02 10:01 PM

I have a Swedish made C900 M93 and the build quality seems even better than my last Finnish built ones.but must say that this has less than 100k km on the odo and the other ones did over 300k..have to wait a long time before i really know but sure they are pretty equal in the quality because made by the same quality standards.
