9-5 - MotorTrend on new model details

Hey guys, I haven't posted here in about 200 years, but I came across this article by motortrend today that's definitely worth a look. I don't know if this is old info or not by now, but I haven't heard it before.

They state that the next 9-5 will have adaptive damping (optional) some smokey plastic stuff for the interior (too look like what they've been doing with the concepts), and a range of high-feature V6 engines starting with the 2.8 V6.

SaabKen 09-06-08 11:31 PM

Great find ! :D

If you don't mind, I added "9-5" to the thread title to give the thread some specificity.

Perfectly alright SaabKen. I was just excited to see some "djup strupe" type of news with the recent slowing of TrollhattanSaab, seeing as that has been where I've gotten all new model news for a while.

Interesting information:

'The nose will bear a strong resemblance to those of the 9-4X crossover and 9-X Biohybrid concept vehicles. So will the greenhouse, with its blackout A-pillars, simple four-sided glass outline, strong C-pillars, and capped roof.'

'It's a big car, with a wheelbase growing from the current 106.5 inches to 111.7 and will use high-end chassis components such as aluminum hubs and suspension arms.'

'Several jewelry elements, including instruments and taillamps, will be of cloudy plastics, to evoke Swedish ice. The ****pit wraps around the driver in typical Saab style.'

'Options will include adaptive damping systems and 20-inch wheels. Steering is hydraulic rather than electrohydraulic.'

'Engines will be all-turbo, including four-cylinder L850 units and GM's high-feature V-6s, starting at 2.8 liters.'

'Eventually the States will likely get GM's brand-new 2.9-liter V-6 diesel to be first launched in the Euro-market Cadillac CTS. It makes 240 horses and 370 pound-feet of torque.'

'The new 9-5 is engineered to receive GM's plug 'n' play mild hybrid system, which uses lithium-ion batteries and is capable of regenerative braking.'

'Many versions will feature AWD with electronically controlled center diff and electronic rear-diff lock, as introduced in the 9-3 Turbo X. Transmissions will be six-speed manual and six-speed automatic across the range, and GM is working on a twin-clutch automated manual.'

'Or as Bob Lutz recently told Motor Trend, "The new Saabs will be the most Saab-like Saabs in the past 30 to 40 years." '

This is great stuff, the writer must have seen the car. Where are the pictures!!

To think about that statement for a minute,....................Bob scares me. :o

Does he mean that 90's, 99's and 900's weren't SAAB-like?

I'm really scratching my head on that one...........................

I'm ashamed.......I've been in posession of 2 SAAB Classic 900's.......and they are not SAAB like.

Bad Rodentmaster, Bad Rodentmaster....................

Aeronaut 10-06-08 04:09 AM

Well I guess the new SAABs will look like this then. Not bad, not bad at all!

That looks fantastic. Anymore info about that car. I see custom quarters, mirrors, and maybe hood on that car. Am I missing something else?

Saab into 2010...

Sounding promising all around I'd say.

Hoping they don't delay the arrival of the new 9-5 SportCombi to the states! :nono;

ACBarnett 11-06-08 12:12 AM

I hope the Aero version is the 4-door (or 5-door :cheesy:) Aero-X that we've all been hoping for, ~400hp and all!

I am seriously looking forward to seeing this car, it had better bethe swedish XF that this brand so desperately needs right now.

Heck I can't even wait to see how the production 9-4X ends up looking

SaabKen 11-06-08 12:32 AM

AC is excited :o Someone grab a camera !!!;)

From original article:
"The new 9-5 was designed in GM Europe's studios in Russelsheim, Germany, rather than in Sweden, but incorporates many of the well-received new Saab design cues. The nose will bear a strong resemblance to those of the 9-4X crossover and 9-X Biohybrid concept vehicles. So will the greenhouse, with its blackout A-pillars, simple four-sided glass outline, strong C-pillars, and capped roof.

Several jewelry elements, including instruments and taillamps, will be of cloudy plastics, to evoke Swedish ice. The ****pit wraps around the driver in typical Saab style. It's a big car, with a wheelbase growing from the current 106.5 inches to 111.7 and will use high-end chassis components such as aluminum hubs and suspension arms. Options will include adaptive damping systems and 20-inch wheels. Steering is hydraulic rather than electrohydraulic.

Engines will be all-turbo, including four-cylinder L850 units and GM's high-feature V-6s, starting at 2.8 liters. E85 versions will be prominent here, while Europe gets diesels, including a 1.9-liter, 200-horse twin-turbo. Eventually the States will likely get GM's brand-new 2.9-liter V-6 diesel to be first launched in the Euro-market Cadillac CTS. It makes 240 horses and 370 pound-feet of torque. The new 9-5 is engineered to receive GM's plug 'n' play mild hybrid system, which uses lithium-ion batteries and is capable of regenerative braking. Many versions will feature AWD with electronically controlled center diff and electronic rear-diff lock, as introduced in the 9-3 Turbo X. Transmissions will be six-speed manual and six-speed automatic across the range, and GM is working on a twin-clutch automated manual.

The degree of electronic alteration, together with upgraded suspension hardware compared with the upcoming Opel Insignia/Saturn Aura, as well as different hard points for the wheelbase and cowl, shows how much brand-character engineers can now build in."

Oh don't get me wrong I really like the 9-3SS as well, I just wish it was a few grand cheaper (and about an inch lower). I'm really excited about the upcoming models and I'm keeping my fingers crossed about them being the kinds of cars that Saab needs yesterday.

That 96 has a Ford 2.6L twin turbo engine that puts out 300 hp. Its the same engine that I had in my first car - a 73 Capri.

cjhutch - Here is a link to an article on the car that i found:

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-new...d-ar27731.html

Wouldn't a retro SAAB based on one of these be great.

Re the next 9-5 - this car is so important. It is all the marbles for SAAB. I am really encouraged by this report, looks like SAAB is pulling out all the stops.

As far a getting that first picture i think you SaabKen need to step up to the plate as head of the news division here and get it done. Just think what could be: SK is the new TS. Nice ring to it!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, man. :)

But honestly, Swade's left a huge pair of shoes to fill. And I have no Deep Throats connections to speak of.

Perhaps a trio consisting of myself, Wulf and 1985 Gripen .....

But in the meantime I'll do my best and keep my Saab-dar cranked up to 300%.

Saab into 2010...

I want release dates for the 9-5 and I want them now! :o

squishmann 16-06-08 03:20 AM

i don't like how saab is staying with a hydraulic steering system...i really really like electromechanical steering.

It appears the hot conversation re: Auto Motor and Sport of Germany's claims to having an actual photo of the new 9-5 (see Trollhattansaab link below) is still going on over there! 24 comments and counting

I must say this looks feasible and possibly could be the nexy Saab 9-5. :o

Shazam 26-06-08 10:57 PM

quick question

is this
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._9-5_front.jpg
the same car, but with a face lift as this?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._9-5_sedan.jpg

Basically, I'm just asking if it was a total re-design like the new 9-3, or just a little quick up-date.
