Hi forum,
I've sorted out my oil slick coming from the turbo return pipe, thanks to the excellent work of Martin over at Jam Saab in Bristol... honestly, if you need a Saab guy, go see him!

Anyway... I seem to be getting a little water, or liquid from the exhaust pipe, but it smells of leather!
Really... i put my hand over the pipe for a few seconds, and my palm smells like my upholstery.

What's up with that? Is that water and oil? Head gasket? I don't know of anywhere else water or this liquid could be coming from. I think the seals and gaskets on my engine might be prematurely knackered as Martin - another plug for him here - pointed out that someone had put the non return valve on the head vacuum section on the wrong way round, so rather than venting gases away from the engine, it was pressurising it. Handy. This might have been like that for years, or only a few months after the previous owner 'serviced' the car. What he did I don't know, but it certainly wasn't an oil change or plugs.

Thoughts?

I have a Saab 93 2.2 TiD (year 2000) and i'm getting an odd situation.
Everytime i cold start the vehicle, i got a CEL on. It does not enter into limp mode or has any performance issue when this happens, but CEL remains on.
When i start the vehicle when the engine is a little bit hotter, or hot, no CEL is displayed.
Most strange is the fact that when i connect an obdII reader, i got no errors displayed.
Anyone with similar situation ?
Got any ideas to solve this ?

Thanks in advance.

Hello friendly Saab gurus. My name is Ian and hopefully I'll be coming by here more and joining your community. I've been trolling for the last few weeks and have been impressed with the smarts of the board members here.

Coming from Volvo and alfa forums, you guys all seem so...what's the word I'm looking for...personable. Yeah. Cause lord knows the Volvo forums aren't the most happening places to be ( I kid I kid).

Anyway, here's what I need a bit of advise on.

I've done a lot of work to both my Bertone and Milano. Both are rear wheel drive and have non-transversely mounted engines I've had to do everything from major electrical surgery on the Milano to new crank seals and valve cover gaskets for the Bertone.

Well, I was just asked by my mother in law if I'd like to purchase her very beautiful and well-maintained '96 Saab 900 convertible.

Of course! Who wouldn't? And for $250, it sounds like a steal, right?

Well, the head gasket is blown. Not a problem if it was located here in town; but this car is located in Minneapolis- a sold 8 hour drive from Omaha.

Well, instead of shipping it here, ($400 or so) I figured I would just change it out myself.

Well, we have decided to travel up there this weekend and I think I'm gonna try to tackle this thing.

I'm leaving Saturday afternoon after work and will leave Monday night.

So two questions;
For someone who has never done a head gasket on a Saab, how long should I expect. I would say my wrenching ability is probably a 5 out of 10. I mean, I've done head gaskets before, but they've always been on easy cars like a Volvo 240 or a Fiat 850. Is this something that will piss me off?

Second, what tools will I need? Since I'll be mostly working on Monday, I'll need to have all of my stuff ready, since most places will be closed that day.

I tried to search bi can't find any of this info.

Thanks a million folks! Wish me luck!

Sincerely,
Ian

So i was at about 80 and i began accelerating full throttle. start building speed and as i got to 100mph the engine light started flashing and the motor and front end started shaking and running rough. Long story short i pulled over turned off the car look under the hood to see if anything came off didn't see anything got back in started it and it was fine.

Now i'm sure when i get a chance and hook up the computer with HPtuners to see what code went off or whatever it will prob tell me. But just seeing if anyone else knew before i find out. I was thinking a misfire maybe but wondering why that would happen.

Also a warning gong sounded, but, no warning light came on. Car drives normal otherwise. Took it into my mechanic today to check it out. All pipes are connected. Electrics OK. He tested waste gate operation. " Vehicle is over boosting and hitting boost safety cut. Have tested waste gate operation with air pressure and opens OK, needs further testing " end of quote. He also phoned the Swedish guy who sells all the turbo parts etc. He said it was most unusual ! Could be the APC module ?
He said this problem was unheard of ?? Any of you learned gentlemen come across this problem ? If so? what is recommended please ?
Please note :- The nearest Saab agent is 4 1/2 hour drive North. Was there once when my ABS module had problems. Quoted $3000. to fix it !! Bought an exchange module for $200. and fitted it myself :-) Get my meaning ? ;-)
Over to you guys. Geriatric 9-3 owner :-P

A few days ago his command center flashed battery not charging make apointment with saab dealer. Long story short the mechanic thought it was the alternator which turned out it wasn't after having myself and my mechanic go through it and he has said it is the engine ecm. I managed to get a used one which has a 2 year warranty and tested to work and was wondering if anyone knew. The steps to remove the old one and replace it...figured it couldn't be as hard as replacing the blend doors on my jeep hvac assembly lol. Also I noticed his cd changer stopped working and won't eject the discs. I've heard this is a common issue if anyone can direct me in how to solve this issue id also appreciate it
