On t5 engine should you be able to move the rod by hand. Mine hardly moves at all. The mechanic I took it to said there was nothing wrong with it. Surely it should move a bit by hand. Would it be safe to try and free it with a very small hammer, hitting it in the direction away from the actuator itself ??
Don't hit it! It should move moderately easily by hand. You need quite a strong grip with both sets of fingers on the bent part of the rod to do it. Don't expect to move it with just a finger and thumb.
They can and do rust and get stuck. It's quite easy to disconnect, squirt and free off.
It's also possible some noggin before you has overtightened it and it needs andjusting (rod made too short).
thanks for that. ill try that. how much should it move by, an inch or more maybe ? Im a strong lad but couldnt budge it at all with one hand and a strong grip. Surely that cant be right.
Its a secondhand item so maybe someone has overtightened it prior to me getting it. Just out of interest, how many threads are showing on yours.
have just popped the bonnet and tried to move the actuator rod by hand. It will not move at all side to side. It only moves up and down a bit. If it was disconnected by my mechanic, should the length of the rod be lengthened(more threads showing) or shortened.
Appreciate your help as i cant use the cars power because of the fuel cut off.
Should move just over half an inch. The way to check the length is to drop it off the lever and it should need about 3mm of pre-load to get it back on.
When you do it, I find it helps to ty-rap the lever closed round the casting on the turbo support arm underneath. If you don't, the wastegate swings fully open and over centre, the penny washer/flapper can get snaggled and it's a fiddle to get it back again. I think it gets caught in the turbine blades
Doesn't harm anything, just fiddly if you let it go.
EDIT:- The lever can rust into the turbo as well as the arm rusting to the rod. Penetrating oil and some wiggling once the arm is off should free it. Also you will get up and down movement in the arm as it's a very loose fit in the actuator - only the rubber diaphagm centres it.
