I just bought a 1999 93 with a automatic, 100k on it.
It runs good, feels like it has lots of power, but when I get on it, it will not hit the red zone for boost, So I am only getting boost in the yellow and not in the red.
Any ideas on what I can look for?
Also is it normal for my saab to sound loud? it's not a exahust sound just a loud whine, kind of like a super charger whine. is this normal? it could just be the turbo, this is my first Saab, I am not famailir with them.
nothing wrong with red though once you have your car more modded...mainly ecu tune and you will be past the red.
But when running with the stock ecu the car has a built in fuel cut off if it overboosts and thats no fun when your not expecting it, and normally you never are.
You may find sporadic peaks into red [just] and this then will peal back to nominal boost [on mine, this is the point where red and yellow meet - no higher or lower], high peaks should be adapted back by the engine mangement - if this doesn't happen the ecu will dump the boost and cut the fuel and if you're not wearing your seatbelt expect to hit the steering wheel with your nose  this engine protection feature is quite sudden! Now you have an auto that is very stunted in comparison to a manual so don't expect anything to exciting.
ya I wish i could of gotten a 5pd but when someones selling a 1999 93 for 3,500 with only 100K on it, and no issues, you can't complain to much about it.
But, does anyone know how hard it would be to swap over to a 5spd?
And don't forget that the stock boost gauge is not really reliable. One car may show a tad red which could equal 13 psi while the other is in the yellow and is also reading 13.
its not supposed to whine...could be the alternator, steering pump, or ac compressor going bad(if it whines when the ac is on). my altenator went bad in my 900 and it made a whining noise....sounded just like a super charger
u wanna go into the red.....open intake kit.....boost controller...youll get into the red and have some more fun then u are having now.....
as for the whining sound...someone told me that it could be the turbo doing that...but i think it would be more of a whining rubbing metal scratching sound....if u can make that sound in ur head....lol
Hey im a saab master technican in ramsey nj. as for ur whine noise it can be many diff things. like one of the other members said it cou;d be the alternator, belt tensioner or p/s pump. a/c compressors are usually a groan sound. also check your oil filter the check valves go bad and they wistle. if u use only saab parts its easy to tell. if u have a blue saab filter it is most likely that. a lil over a year ago they changed to the filter to a black one and modified it. but the black ones could also go bad but not as easily. if u havent changed ur oil in a while do that it is the cheapest fix and should be done at every 3000 miles regardless of what type of oil u use ive replaced more engines on these cars then i can count and this is ppl using full synthetic and goin 7,500 every 3000.
also if u have developed a sludge problem then it is also safe to say that u have ruined the balance chain tensioner and ur noise could be coming from the timing chain cover and u need to do all new gears and a tensioner on the balance chain. and it is behiend the timing chain so u might as well do that too. (oh to do it u need to drop the motor out of the car) i hope i could be of some help good luck.

Well I finally had some time to go thru the car last night and found the power steering rsivor to be low, due to loose hose clamps:x
Filled it up, no more noise!!
Then I noticed that just about EVERY darn hoose clamp was loose, so I thighted all of them, then I was noticing that the valve cover bolts were just as loose, thats probally why the valve cover seems to have been leaking, I tighted them, then sprayed the whole compartment with gunk and washed her down. Now hopefully I wont be haveing oil leaks coming out of the motor area, hopefully I dont need to replace the valve cover gasket now.
The next step will be to jack the car up and check all the rest of the bolts and suspension and see what else is loose.
I am changing the oil night, want to do a engine oil flush, what do u recomend useing??? and what is the best synthetic oil to use, wheight?
I was kind of worried finding all the loose hoses, clamps, bolts. But the car seems to going good, I put a intake on last night to, it seems to move pretty good now...
If you look really really hard you might be able to find a few posts on this board about MBC+A's. Read up, that will get you into early-mid red before fuel cut.
Saab recommends a little heavier oils as do a lot of euro based cars, I'm currently using mobil 1 10-30 but some people might say that's to thin. There's also an oil sticky I think in the other 94-02 forum.
Careful with the intake, I also use a cone but I have a tube running down to behind the fog light. If you have the intake point in the engine compartment without heat shielding you're probably hurting yourself.
No I got heat sheilding, I was planning on running the intake down in to the fender/bummper area, but my car doesn't have a splash gaurd, so I want to wait until then, run it down.
I tend to disagree Cleve :cheesy:.
..but check hoses, because one time a hose fell off the BPC and it wouldn't boost past yellow but the turbo was loud as hell. And.. I never got a CEL or anything .
I also have a 1999 9-3. My boost rarely goes above white? At most <1/4 into the yellow. I remembered when I bought it used, I thought "this little car has some Omph". Now, it seems to drag in the lower RPM acceleration......once I get into higher RPMs the boost seems to kick in. My boost gauge has never even come close to half yellow.
I've been searching for what could be the problem and this thread is the closest I've seen.
I purchased a 1999 9-3 auto and it had the same problem, boost would only go midway into the yellow. I checked for boost leaks, ie. intercooler clamps, hoses etc. and found none. I diagnosed the problem to be a bad BDC so I then purchased a MBC + A from Smart performance to fix the problem and give me a bit more power.
Apparently, I need to remove the wastegate to determine the problem. If I remove the wastegate and the turbo works, I need a BPC......if it doesn't work I have boost/hose leak. Or that's at least the impression I'm getting?
I removed the wastegate hose from the BPC valve, and jammed a bolt in the end of the hose.
WOW!!! Now that's boost. Sadly I couldn't hammer down because it would go into gas reduction/red. I only did that twice before I realized I need a new valve.
Did I order the wrong part? I ordered part # 55562786.($64)......which is not the BPC near the radiator ($250).;oops: To be honest, I don't even know where the I have goes?
Since I removed & plugged the Wastegate hose from the BPC by the radiator, and the boost worked but went into fuel reduction.................which BPC Valve do I need to replace?
HELP!
Joshua
EDIT: Should I just go for a MBC+A? Will that work seamlessly with my stock 9-3?

Does the whine occur at all times, when you first start it up, or after you get off the throttle?
