1.) i want to paint the side skirts on my SE to gloss black, or even the same color of the car....citron beige....can i take the side skirts off to paint? or do i have to tape off the body and such?
2.) how do i paint the grill? do i have to take the chrome off of it? or can i just paint right over it?
3.) how do i paint the mirrors like the viggens? just clean and tape off the close by parts and spray? or should i sand it and then spray? do i need to use primer on these or no?

You mean you "helped" someone out and didn't know the right way to do it?
I would think that you need to get the chrome off as that doesn't allow great adhesion. Primers help add to the adhesiveness of overcoats. Get a second grille and practice on it. Are you thinking of painting it the Citrin beige? I have been thinking of doing the same, but it seems as though the chrome and the beige are not going to make a dramatic difference.
he helped me.....but it came out perfect and we left the chrome on there but we sanded it and primed it 2x...and then sanded it again and the painted it black and then clear coated it...and it came out great

yes, i am thinkin og painting to citron beige...match it with the body....maybe i should photoshop it first to see how it comes out...ill have the pix 2morro!:cheesy:
Pretty much, if you want anything smooth and glossy, you'll need to sand, prime paint sand clear sand.
Just depends on how glossy you want it! Now, if you go satin or something like that, just spray it.
The chrome on my grill was peeling, and I wanted to paint it before a meet. I just cleaned it and primered it. Looks great. Its black primer, but it looks better than peeling chrome. When I have the time, I will sand it all down. I will esentially rough up the chrome pretty well, and sand really well the chrome to plastic transistions (where the chrome has peeled). You could use some filling primer, or use some spot putty to make that transistion and sand it down so it is a little smoother. I guess it depends on how much primer you want to put on.
Speaking of, dad and I are primering his MG midget this weekedn, perhaps I should get the grill ready and shoot it too!?
Yes, primered mirrors would be nice..I was too cheap! I like to call it resourceful. Just remember to primer on the sideskirts or it may appear to be a different color, not to mention those things are pretty textured. Thats why mine aren't painted yet, I was assured I needed to primer them and I didn't have the time at the time. Be careful with the nuts that holt the side skirts on, they're plastic and can strip very easily.
alright, thanx for the replies guys, ill hoopefully be doing these this week
