Hey guys I just bought a 9000 turbo 5dr 1989-90 model
thats all i know.
bought it for $500au and was told it was a carlson.
really cheap so i thought yeah it looks good what the hell and bought it.
any info would help, been in storage for about 1 year when i found it.
thought it would make a nice project.
cheers knibbsta
Wow, nice score! That's about $396 USD, amazing!! Even if it's just a parts car, it's worth so much more than that! I can't say if it's a Carlsson for sure, but it certainly has the airflow body kit at the very least. Want to sell it? So give us a few more details? What sort of work does it need, how's the interior, does it go like stink, etc!
Sorry mate dont know anything yet, I bought it from a repo auction and going to pick it up in 2 days. its got a broken front headlight glass and missing fuel cap, 220000km on it and is a 5 speed turbo 2ltr.
I was hoping for some info from you as the seller didnt know anything about it except it was a carlson and i didnt know what they were and neither did he.
I was thinking of using it as a project if it is in good nick.
sounds like a good find?
is there a link to the specs of this vehicle and was it even sold in australia?
how can i check if it is authentic or just a copy?
cheers knibbsta
MAN WHAT A GREAT SCORE>.. check out www.carsales.com.au there are a couple just like it on there for 10 fold what you paid. Or maybe it was on aus ebay, I can't remember.
Looks to be a Carlson model to me. No doubt needs a lot of work to get it back to good shape. Post lots of pics, interior ones aswel as exterior.
Oh and it doesn't look like the standard exhaust of a carlson, but it could just be a tip, and the rest could still be the stock exhaust. Exhausts last alot longer here in Aus that other common area's of the world that Saabs are commonly found.

Ok, heres how it goes.
I went to look at the car and its all there, great body no dents, paint work good will come up nice with a buff, rims and tyres are great, engine all there i think, looks like aftermarket intercooler piping, the spark plug cover wasnt screwd down and upon inspection one of the plastic plug holder/thingys was broken/snapped. also one of the giant plugs next to the abs controller was unplugged?right hand side of engine bay rear.
interior is so-so, stereo missing couple various buttons missing. found most around the interior thought. Has leather interior and woodgrain dash. roof lining is coming down as well.
has carlsson badge work and saab scania badge on bonnet.
so i pulled the battery out of the missus car and threw it in.
soon as i did the blinker started, good sign i thought. anyway jumped in andreliased the hazards were on, not good sign! turn the ingtion to reds and got them as well as the hron so i disconnected the horn and tried agian when i heard a fuse pop. so i left it at that and arranged a tow truck to come and oick it up in 2 days, monday in AUS.
post pics when i get it home.
anyone know of a saab mechanic in sydney that would have a look at the engine?
overall i think its a great buy and am still deciding what i should do with it.
restore?sell?part out?
There is a saab specialist up in Mona Vale, then you've got Saab Serve in Parramatta and there is one mechanic in Peakhurst that does saabs. There is probably more, but that's all that I know.
I can give you their contact details if you are interested.
Also, note that I've never used their services (since I never let any mechanic near my car) so I can't really recommend anyone in particular.
i got it from grays auctions. and it was at an old factory that must have been repossed or liquidated out kingswwod way, next door to the rebels compound.
im in kingsgrove and would like someone to hava look at it, so maybe the details of that guy in peakhurst as thats only up the road from me.
post lots of pics when i get it home.
got the car yesterday and looked it over closer. No rust at all great body with one little dent thats tiny. speaking of tiny, the turbo is so small!!!
motor looks good except i think it needs a going over as i found one missing turbo hose clamp so far and something missing next to abs controller? in pic.
anyway looks promising. interior is allright, needs a clean up and new floor carpets, stereo and maybe a new steering wheel.
what do you think? I would like to fix it up but dont want a money pit.
probably make more $$$ parting it out but these cars seem too be fairly rare.and dont really want to take another one of the road.:nono;
Yep, definitely looks like a Carlsson to me, as it has the distinctive suede seats. At $400, even if it doesn't run, it makes a beautiful lawn ornament! Of coruse, it's better if you have a big lawn.. It certainly could be a money pit, as can any 9000 that has not been taken care of. And you're totally right that you could make a good amount of money (far more than you paid) by parting it out - assuming 9000 parts are in as much demand in Australia as they are in the US. Heck, just for the body kit on that car you could make back all your money or more. The wheels would probably get you a similar amount, as they look to be in excellent shape.
So much hinges on how it was treated. You can spend a LOT of money fixing things like the transmission, ABS, A/C system, etc. Your $400 car could easily turn into 10 times that. Not surprising that it has little rust.
if i'm not wrong the wires unpluged near your battery are for the ecu is it missing from the car ??? if so the car will not start without it ! check under the pass side seat to see if the red box apc is still there, car looks very nice m8!

Yes, that does look like the ECU plug. However, if the APC is under the seat, as it should be with that year, then wouldn't the silver box shown in the picture be the ECU? As I understand it, Saab didn't switch to having both APC and LH boxes in the 'aquarium' until 1992. My 1991 only has the LH ECU in that spot. In my 1987, the APC box was under the dash by the steering column.
had a look under the passenger seat and saw a bank of plugs 3-4 and no red box
found a tiny bit of red plastic though
the silver box in pic is the abs controller, it said it on the side.

i have put the carly red box apc and ecu in my m8's car 1990 2.0 t16 se and the ecu is where the abs ecu is and the red box apc is under the seat, the guy who we got them off took them from the same place out of a 1989 carly thats all i can say but it looks to me that its not there in the pic so the car is missing the 2 box's  but if you cant get the box's you can lend my m8's t16 se box's that will work on the car (just 185bhp) so at least you can get it running or you see them all the time on uk ebay so they are'nt that hard to find
put it on ebay if anyone is interested.
