My Saab has gone to hell and its only the forth month i had it. The car has done about 202000 mile in its life. About 3 weeks ago it started to knock slightly and i didn't have the money to fix it, now the crank shaft seal is leaking and im going up the wall. Im going to talk to the shop wear i bought the car since im still making payment and hope they will let me pay off the parts and labor over time. the thing i know im going to have replaced are the crank shaft seal and a timing gear kit but what else should i have them look and or replace and a ballpark on about how much they will costme.
the cars a 1994 saab 9000 cse with a 2.3l non turbo engine and all of it stock
except the 1100 watt sups in the back
Some of what i've said in the other thread. Yogi, it would help us if you could keep mostly related things in the same thread rather than leave a half active thread and start a highly related new one. That's just my opinion of course but in trying to help, I have to keep following parallel dialogue in several threads!
Head gasket is the other popular one but I have no experience of normally aspirated Saab engines and their behaviour with head gaskets. It could be with the lower pressures that blowing head gaskets isn't a favourite trick.
If that's not the case, then if you're doing the labour yourself, for the extra time taken and small extra cost, it could be well worth changing the head gasket while you've got the timing cover off. You're 80% of the way to doing it anyway and it's much easier with the timing cover off.
When you buy a 9000, its best to have $5000 sitting around dedicated to fixing the car. That should last at least a couple years. Not the type of car i'd like to be making payments on. They are getting so old, it seems they are only for enthusiasts who can afford to have problems in the $1000+ price range relatively frequently. Or for the person who has a backup beater civic just in case something happens.
Sorry ur having so many problems yogi, hope things work out for you
really? i have a 95 aero at home with 310k miles thats had nothing replaced but a waterpump because the gasket started leaking, and of course a di or 2.
Saab dealer prices and labour rates will suck that up yes so do the work yourself, plenty of the popular jobs are just basic spannerwork, needing no specialised tools.
well im going to the shop tomarrow to have them look at it. im going to ask thme to see how much it will cost me to but in a timeing chaine kit and a crankshat seal and hope that all they find wrong with it. How mush is this going to cost me parts and labor
I am with DJ on this. If I am not doing the repair myself, I will never buy a SAAB. It is just too expensive to have someone else repair your SAAB. I'll stick to Honda's and Toyota's. This is the advice I give to my brother-in-law, who is not mechanically inclined and has no interests what-so-ever in maintaining cars himself. He is quite happy with his Toyota's.
the shop i found is not a Saab dealer, it a import shop about 10 mints from my house. Iv talked to a few people that have take thear saabs thea and they wear happy. The cost is about 50 bucks a hour for labor, and that about ever shop i found around weather its a saab or not so how long will it take to do a timeing chain kit replaced
