Need to replace timing chain and PERHAPS balance shaft chain. Many hours of labor to do either or both. One mechanic says don't bother with replacing the balance shaft chain - he calls it a "yuppie chain". Another mechanic says - kit is about $ 300 - Saab engineered it into their 4 cyl for a reason - replace it while everything is apart. Bottom line: if I intend to keep 9000 for many years..... do I need a balance shaft chain aka "yuppie chain"? Would I damage, over time, other systems/parts in engine, if vibration becomes an issue by not reinstalling Bal. Shaft Chain? Thanks.
In my experience and some people think different you do not need the balance chain, I ran without one for 20000 miles and didn't notice any difference, some people notice cabin vibration at high revs etc but was super smooth to me. The last 2 engines I've built I have removed all the balance shaft stuff completely...so I can recommend it.
When they sent me to 2.3 SAAB service school, they spent 4 hours in the classroom explaining the purpose and function of the balance shafts.
They convinced me that they're worthwhile.
If the person you're taking advice from can't do better than "Yuppie Chain", I'd be wary of his advice.
