View Full Version : Why Forge, aftermarket bov instead of Viggen part?

I'm just curious why so many owners use expensive aftermarket blow-off/by-pass valves when the OEM Viggen part can be had for 60 bucks and is up to the challenge of the hot-rodded engines. Even Nick T from GenuineSaab uses one on his 340-hp Viggen. Are there any significant advantages to the aftermarket valves costing twice as much?

I've used the Viggen/HOT BPV before and it worked perfectly fine as a BOV for several months. Once I upgraded my turbo, it couldn't handle the additional airflow, so I went with a Tial.
I still running my orig bosch from MY00 and never have had a problem with it.
Drops boost quick enough for my needs. However if I end up braking it, it will buy something else...

hey mike i have a 99 9-3 hot and i've asked this before and never got an answer but i was actually wondering if my 9-3 hot had the same bpv as the viggen. is this certain and how would i be able to confirm this? i do plan on replacing with a forge unit but was wondering how much the viggen/hot bpv can normally handle
I went to a Hyperboost shorty only because my stock viggen diverter was faulty. It would blow the top off everytime I went wot in thrid gear up. Not fun when your going up hill on a freeway in 4th gear in the fast lane and it happens. Getting over to the shoulder on a 4 lane wide freeway with traffic when your car is dying is not fun.
Because they last. You have to grease it every now and than but it stands up to higher boost levels.

I don't think yours did.
IIRC, the 99 H.O.T. uses the same turbo as the regular SE model. After 00, Saab used the TD04 from the Viggen as the High Output Turbo and used the heavy duty BPV in all turbo models....
yeah thats what i was thinking. i was thinking since on my 99 its not the upgraded turbo the bpv isnt either probably

I just got an aftermarket one cause I came across a good deal, and I figured I would just do it right the first time. The vigg one is good, but is still plastic/rubber diaphram.

Plus you get the cool noise of a BOV :D
I know with my car, it has a CBV stock which holds fine up to around 16-18 psi (normal amounts for a chipped volvo) but after that the diaphragm begins to tear sometimes. SO I figured why not jsut toss on a BOV and use a blanking plate to block off the CBV (compression bypass valve) and both be prepared for higher boost, and get the cool sound I can scare children with.
