They can just sort of stop working like that if the commy has worn out on the fan motor. To check this on an intermittent motor, take the aquarium cover off, there's a small plastic cover to an inspection hole in the side of the motor's plastic cover assembly. Once you're in there you should be able to spin the fan by hand (well, finger). Start the car or just turn it to 'run' so that the fan should come on, if it does, you'll be able to see it spinning through the hole and should feel the fan sucking air through the hole, obviously if this happens the motor is working at this point. If it doesn't spin, try giving the blades a spin by hand, just to see if it had stopped in a bad position, if it had, and spinning gave it a 'kick-start' then you know it's the motor assembly that's worn out and you need a new motor (or used one that's done less work (more than 80k miles is probably a false economy as it hasn't got long left). Also if you're getting a used one from a scrappy yourself, try and get one from a non-ACC car as they've only 4 speeds instead of 8 and will generally have had less usage IMO.
(wups, that turned into a rather long paragraph, hope it makes sense)
