: Head Gasket replacement. Strange sound???

Hi all!!!!!!!!!!

I have just had my head gasket totally re-done. The engine turns over a dream and I no longer have any smoke out of the back upon startup, and no leaky expansion tank. Thanks loads to all Saabcentral members for the diagnosis.

One strange thing though is that I can now hear a LOUD high pitched sound coming from the engine when I start the car. It makes the car sound stupid/rediculous. It stops after about 10 mins of driving and the engineer said it was nothing to worry about, it was apparently the engine re-adjusting itself after the extensive work... Should I go back to him and ask him to investigate it or has anyone else heard of this problem and will it ever go away?
(PS, it doesn't happen every single time but I have been unable to narrow it down to any specific pattern)

Eagerly awaiting your kind advice,

Mark

I would question the engineers ability!!

Its not something simple like the serpentine belt slipping due to oil contamination caused by the work done on the head?
I had a a sqealing belt tensioner pully which I cured by an application of oil, worked eventhough the bearings are sealed for life jobs.

Hi Marrk,

Quote: Its not something simple like the serpentine belt slipping due to oil contamination caused by the work done on the head?

I'd love to agree but I really have no idea what the 'serpentine belt' belt is. Sorry if this seems a bit stupid but I am still learning my way around the car engine. There seems to be a lot of names for the same things. :-??
It sounds like is coming from inside the head. Where would I put the oil as you said, I don't want to damage the engine.

:D

(PS - if you all get bored of me not knowing too much about the internal workings of my engine, you can come and do me in at the SOC in Nottingham in July  C U all there!)

The belt is located on the drivers side of the engine it goes over numerous pullys i.e A/C, power steering, alternator, water pump and main crankshaft pully....as the belt needs to be kept at a constant tension there is a spring loaded hydraulic dampened tensioner...pully is black in colour and presses against the flat side of the belt. The bearing in the middle of that pulley on mine was sqealing. I would be very concerned that this type of noise is coming from inside the cam cover and would take it back to the guy who did it and if he cannot give an explaination get a second opinion.
