9000 Gurus... I need info regarding a 97 9000 CS my fiancee wants to buy for a DD.
My memory is telling me (failing me?) that it's a 2.3t. Did they offer a 2.3 lpt in 97? What are the possibilities for this engine as far as performance goes? How long do lpt autoboxes tend to last (before mods, of course)? What should I expect to pay on the above with 80,000 miles, a brand new head, headgasket, water pump, hoses etc, perfect interior, excellent exterior, poor tires and brakes, shot torque rod bushings?
Currently she has a POS 93 corolla that is falling apart and she is in love with the comfort and features of the 9000. I just need to make sure I get a fair price on it really. The performance bits are more for my own amusement ;oops:
For Europe the 2.3 lpt was offered 95 - 98. Tuning wise you can bring it up beyond Aero spec to a hefty 295BHP Here
price wise I don't know the American market, autobox seems to depend on driving style and regular fluid changes (but I've never owned one).
All Trionic 9000s are T5. The autoboxes are the same for European and US market.
The difference between a FPT and a LPT is only a ECU, a BPC valve and a boost gauge, so getting a LPT with upgrades in mind is not a bad idea.
For the autoboxes, check out the excellent boxman's write up in the stickies inthe 9000 forum.

Excellent! Thank you both for the helpful information. She's been sold on it, I think now I'm sold on it as well. I can get parts at pretty reasonable prices and it looks to be a pretty good strong car. I might go take it for a spin again being more critical of the tranny since that is the most expensive bit left to replace. Now it's just a money matter I suppose. BTW, here she is.
I would guess that autoboxes on LPTs would last much longer than FPTs due to the lower torque output of the LPT engine. It's the FPTs driven by speed demons that you should worry abut buying.
BTW, that car looks very nice , but where are the headlight wipers ??

Yeah. I know that this autobox is in better shape than a fpt box would be at the same mileage. What I wondered was if the fpt box is actually stronger in any way...
As for the wipers... The wipers are missing but the stalks are there. Question, aside from the fact that it's saaby what good do the headlight wipers actually do?

The wipers do clean the headlights when you are driving in a wet country like Ireland and your car gets covered in mud from the car in front, they operate when the screen washer gets deployed, nowadays some cars have high pressure washers which achieve the same result.
If you buy the car I'd loose the pre-owned sun visor
They wipe the headlights! As last_straw says, when you're in a country with lots of rain and typically country roads which get washed in mud off the adjoining fields, they do wipe the dirt off. Not necessarily brilliantly, depends on how effective the springs still are but they do help.
They also keep snow build up off too if you're in one of those areas.
And if the washer jets work ok, Mine are blocked up I think, I can here the washer pump whirring, but no juice shoots out tho, just the wipers moving on dry glass.
Yeah... I can't think of a road that isn't paved for 50 miles in any direction... and rain here is considered a miracle by the grace of God. "Snow"? What's that?
