again, search will not work for this. you think i'm going to try to think of everything i could do to a 900 s and then search individually? :x ah well in still having interest in the 900 s at the saab dealership downtown, i wanted to know anyone's [Ithoughts and opinions[/I] on different mods that might add a few horsepower here and there (all up to before having to completely replace the engine for a turbo one). i've read about the swiss cheese airbox which seems like a lovely start, but anyone have thoughts on what to do later on to such a car?
my first saab was a '86 900S and it was a great car in great condition... only thing was, that it was a slug.... save your wallet for a 900T, honestly it is a better buy, IMO
if your heart is set on the 900S then after a few easy mods (airbox, gut the cat, pull out the back seats and carpet, racing stripes) you're going to have to spend a hefty amount of money to make it go faster ( header, exhaust, larger throttle body, lightened flywheel, port/polish cylinder head, balance/blueprint all rotating masses, bore out block/larger pistons, lighter wheels, nitrous, etc.)

i have no intention of dumping out my wallet for this car. i only ask because it is at the top of my list considering it's at a dealership very near to where i live, and i've heard it's in great condition. the unfortuonate thing is i have not seen it and do not know the price. my only other option if this car doesn't work out for me is to drive all the way up to massachusetts and buy a turbo model from a relative. i'm just considering what i can do to an s because of the benefits i see in the one here.
Turbo & n/a tuning are really very similar, afterall your just trying to get more air into the engine, with turbo's obv. your adding an extra bit of umpf to that air, but the principals are the same.
De-restrict the inlet, you want to make sure as much of that 14.7 psi of atomospheric pressure is at the inlet, rather than it being reduced because of a conveluted intake tract, a descent header and exhaust balanced to the tuning of the engine so the exhaust pulses work at the desired rpm range and help draw out the fumes from the cylinder and help fresh fuel/air mixture enter the cylinder. Loose the cat.
I'd scrap the air box and the AMM, get an aftermarket ECU like megasquirt (which will also help you tune the car slightly richer for more power over economy) that uses MAP & inlet temp (you may already have a crank tigger wheel depending on the year), make a descent sized air box under the headlight and run 3" pipe to the inlet, maybe bore out the throttle body slightly, get the head worked and maybe a more aggressive intake cam, and if go as far as the exhaust cam make sure your exhaust header is balanced to the cam.
Take the carpets out and remove the sound insulation underneath, relace with a lighter version if nessesary.
Take a look at Ejenners 8v i, it has'nt set him back that much to get a half descent nitros system going, i'm sure it's just as effective at putting a smile on your face as a turbo motor:D .
I've also changed my mind a bit on turbo'ing n/a's. you could quite safely run 5psi (intercooled) on a higher compression engine without really having to worry about it going pop.

Is the "turbo model from a relative" in as good nick as the 900s? If so, get up to massachusetts and buy it. There are easy cheap mods for a turbo car that will get you more horsepower, and you are starting off for a much higher level. If you buy the 900s, the next thread will be "how can I turbo it?".

ha i don't think so. i asked about the reliability of that already, and it's either blow up the engine or completely rebuild it to properly take a turbo. i don't have the tools or the money for that.
and the turbo model in massachusetts? well considering i'd be able to go to a used car auction and pick one out myself or specify what i wanted, i'm sure it could very well be a good one for a low price. and while up there, i will have access to the tools to service the car myself before driving it back home. more advanced, but i guess it does sound like a slightly better option, doesn't it?
