Saw this on another saab site in the classifieds and thought it looked like a good idea. has anyone had one of these installed?

Does your oil pan look like this? Oil pressure drops and excessive engine wear begins when carbon or foreign particles clog the oil pick-up screen. The conventional oil pan and pick-up screen must be removed and cleaned to restore proper oil pressure and prevent engine failure. In some extreme cases an engine flush is required to remove the sludge. Even after an engine flush is completed, contaminates continue to be washed from the engine walls by oil flow into the oil pick-up screen requiring another costly and time-consuming oil pan removal. Remove Sludge; Not the Oil Pan. Install the Sludge/Debris Accumulator Oil Pan and in minutes during regular oil changes, the accumulator cover can be removed, and the oil pan and pick-up screen can be inspected. Cleaning of the oil pan and oil pick-up screen is done by placing a Shop-Vac hose against the oil-pick screen. Oil remaining in the engine is pulled through the pick-up screen washing away particles and sludge leaving a cleaner environment in which to install new oil. Not me personally, but Chuch Andrews (Andrews of Princeton) has been using one for a while as well as doing other sludge tests and monitors. If you're not familiar with his work, check out his website andrewsofprinceton.com and look for his NINES articles. Most recent article has a photo or two I believe. They also have a method for cleaning engines and a maintenance plan for eliminating sludge.

If I were closer and needed another late model Saab, it'd surely consider buying from him. They are definitly looking out for you best interests as well as your Saab's

Have you ever been to Andrews? It's Saab heaven. Picked up my sport chassis kit from them this summer and had them do some other minor work - it's about a 7hour drive for me.

Huge shop (must have about 24 service bays), lineup of a couple dozen used Saabs, lineup of a few dozen wrecked-for-Parts Saabs, and friendly knowledgable people. I was so tempted by the steel grey '02 Aero wagon on the lot....

I spoke with someone a week or so back who had one and he said they weren't very expensive. He didn't say exactly how much...but he said labor would be much more than the price of the pan.


I cleaned my pan back in the spring, so, hopefully between that and the update #6 I just ordered about 5 mins ago I'll be okay. I went ahead and got the kit b/c I stripped my bleepin' drain plug last night and need a new one.

thought I'd bring this back. has anyone tried it?? It's $350 and they emailed me the pdf with the specs. looks like it is good insurance.

That seems a little steep...couldn't one just fabricate an access hatch, secured by bolts and a seal, a lot cheaper? Cut a hole in the pan, get a circular piece of aluminum ("al-u-nin-ium" in the UK!) and drill press the holes....

Drop the pan (s u m p) in the UK, clean it then only use fully synthetic oil changing it every 5,000 miles (plus make sure the PCV is good and up to date).

Problem solved?????

yeah but the one they have is much nicer. I don't have a welder either.. It would be nice to be able to check it once in a while to see what's up. Sure I can drop it once, clean it and forget about it..but it would just keep buggin me. Also because you did it once it doesn't mean it won't come back.

Yes it does..........well unless you dont change the oil regularly, or use crap oil or have a duff PVC or all three :confused:

As for the PVC, there's been so many updates who knows which one actually works. Wasn't there a post where someone checked 7k miles later and there was more crud found? I don't think there is a definite fix for sludge. With the access hole, you can check it whenever just to be sure. I plan on keeping the car as long as I can.

Sadly no. The owner is retiring and they've closed up shop.

They were auctioning off all their assets though, which may be worth a look for anyone in or near MN. Not sure if the auctions are still going on.

You shouldn't need it if your car is well taken care of ( synthetic oil changes every 5K or better) and you have the PCV upgrade

Car has updated pcv kit and previous owners took it in every 3k miles. But they didn't use synthetic oil. I have full service history. But I had the pan dropped anyway last week and the pickup screen was pretty clogged up. Had it cleaned. So I hope I won't have to deal with dropping it again.

Car has updated pcv kit and previous owners took it in every 3k miles. But they didn't use synthetic oil. I have full service history. But I had the pan dropped anyway last week and the pickup screen was pretty clogged up. Had it cleaned. So I hope I won't have to deal with dropping it again.

Supposedly, doing all of those things virtually eliminates the issue. Here's hoping the internet is telling the truth. I've never heard of the internet being wrong before.

This issue was very active before the 2005 with engines failing all over the place. Saab replaced hundreds and this guy sold a lot of these sumps on the recommendation of Chuck Andrews. After the PCV Mod 6 came out the remedy of sump drop and synthetic oil pretty much eliminated failing motors except for those who never heard of the issue. That is why it is still risky to buy a pre 04 without records. I bought a an 01 from Andrews with a replaced motor

ONce clean and set up properly with updated PCV and Synthetic every 3-5 K miles you will never need to repeat a drop of use the special pan

I have debris accumulator oil pans on three of my Saab's.They were invented by Bobby Bright as a result of his experience with his Saab 93 and a sludge issue. He died and the patent was sold to Chuck Andrews. The quality was great when Bobby was building them, dropped off slightly with Andrews building them (welds not as clean).
My experience using them has been great, very easy to remove cover and check for any specs of sludge in the screen. And yes, there is specs of sludge every time I check. I use Shell Rotella 5w-40 and change oil every 4k.

Have you done a engine flush and do you have the updated pcv kit?? I actually have a 9-3. And I had my pan dropped a little while ago. Going to use liqui Molly engine flush every other oil change to help keep my pickup screen from getting clogged again.

I don't live in Indianapolis. I also found out about the pan through that site. I paid to have the pan dropped on my saab and it already has the new pcv kit. I use liqui moly 5w-40 full synthetic. As well as I plan to use liqui moly engine flush and ceratec every other oil change (10 thousand miles) with the new kit and the fully synthetic oil I should be good. Plus the engine flush and ceratec as added insurance that the engine is kept clean.

I normally use Costco gas (top tear gas) or Fred Meyers. I always use premium as my 9-3 is a 205r high output turbo. I know the cars can run on anything but they recommend premium. So that's what I do, Sadly. it's very expensive [emoji14]
