DustinS 27-07-11, 01:39 PM L-O-V-E that front end! What is it, and where can I find one?!?
Its a Pre-Facelift car(1985) with the bumper taken off... and you can find one on just about any pre-facelift car haha.
Lets hear it for on track N/A's! We were even faster than that #77 Miata ;ol;
Did that BMW happen to have a v8 in it?

Nice!
ludichris001 29-07-11, 01:01 PM Yeah mate, ended up getting it down to $2100. Even if i bought it for the price he was asking it would have still been an absolute steal, the car is immaculate :D
That is gorgeous! I love the colour. Is that a 2.1L 900i? Only needs a T16 motor to be perfect.
ludichris001 29-07-11, 11:36 PM Cheers :)
Yes, its a 2.1L, I've always wondered what a 2.1 would go like with a turbo... I do have quite a few turbo bits lying around... Hmm...
Do you see where this is maybe going? :D

As a LPT? Yeah maybe it would go alright, the compression ratio would be too high for FPT wouldn't it?
Interior photos?
Is that meant to be burgundy or maroon, looks more maroon.
I want to know what my 84 will look like with new paint! :)
I want some aero rims too.. Perhaps another parts car is in order for the steering knuckle/hub upgrade haha
ludichris001 30-07-11, 12:25 AM LPT runs around 5 psi IIRC (which is pretty much nothing, in my opinion) I wouldn't go over 10 psi of boost with the 2.1. in saying that, i had my 900i running around 17psi through its n/a engine and it held up quite well.
I believe the colour may be ruby red? i'm not 100% sure, as i cant seem to find the paint code.
Your '89 parts car should have the later style hubs? time for swaps!

That interior is flipping MINT! How were you running 17psi!? what the!? what was the set up? Yeah ok, yeah 10psi sounds safe, with or without Intercooler?
What a great buy! You must be so happy...
Re the parts car thing - I don't have one anymore as I had to scrap mine when I moved house. It was a bit of a shame, there were dozens of parts on it that I now wish I had. It's ok, I'm sure another parts car will turn up in time!

Cheers mate :)
Yes, i was running 17 psi using a manual boost controller, direct ignition and LH ECU from a 2.3 turbo 9000. It was more of a 'thow it together and see how long it lasts' thing. To my surprise, it lasted a very long time, and was a great ball of fun to drive :D
The 2.1 will definitely have an intercooler, I am currently sorting through my mountain of parts and collecting the bits i need
I've spotted a few wrecks on ebay lately, so getting another parts car shouldn't be too much of a hassle

skucera 06-08-11, 11:53 AM That Triumph badge is right enough. The motor design was licensed from Triumph, after all. Its basic design is shared with the Dolomite, and the 8-valve version is even more similar to the TR-7 8-valve engine. I got a smile when I saw that.

Yes, but not on the 16v head. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumph_Slant-4_engine
Tailspin 06-08-11, 02:04 PM You don't have to tell me to be a proud SAAB owner, its just a joke . Man snaabs gettin all in a twist.. btw the badge fell out during the race, Team Reynolds style (with a Burt Reynolds theme) nuked a transmission on track and found the badge in a pile of synchro bits and needle valves. They brought it back to us! I think I'll leave it off just for the valient effort.

Sand and repaint the bumpers! It's easy and transforms the car.

88saab900s 08-09-11, 09:51 PM I stay far away from curbs ;ol; the pod was a generic one from autozone... took a torch to the pod and heated it up to mold it to the pillar, so now yes it does fit well haha.

Lorna and I just got back from a 1K mile Chicago - North Woods, WI tour and the 900 performed flawlessly. Damn, I love this car. The joy of driving was amplified by 80 degree F, sunny days and dozens of deserted roads. The fall season leaf changes were just past their prime, but still gorgeous.

The convertible, Classy! Both cars look stunning. I love you SPG, looks just like mine:) Both cars are done just right.
The last picture of the interior, is that the SPG and if so are those convertible door panels? What did you do to the bottom of them, boxed in for speakers?
Mine is off the road at the moment for winter, I miss driving it already:(
Also, the seat covers look knew, where did you get the skins?

Thanks much! The black one is not an SPG, but rather a '93 Commemorative Edition. Yes, door panels were customized to allow an additional pair of speakers.

Talladega900 30-10-11, 11:15 PM Just realized I didn't answer your Q on the seat covers. Yes, they're new. Got them through Saab Stuff about two years ago. Both cars are pretty much frame off restorations.
Keith509 31-10-11, 12:16 AM So the other day weather people were saying a chance of snow in central jersey.... glad I put the snow tires on at 8am that morning to be on the safe side...

Ok, I see that they are suction cups now, the tabs are in just the right places to look like glasses, x-ray glasses that is. Ya keep that thing out of the where others can't see it. Here, you can be charged for having a radar detector.
The other thing, around here, if you even have a mount for a GPS out in the open, thieves think there is one in the car and will bust a window to get the thing. I have this saying, don't tempt people with problems, Keep all things out of view.
Thanks! Tires are 205/45-16's, and that would be the radar detector mount. ;ol;
What springs are you using as well, great stance on both. I have Intrex on the front of mine and looks about the same as yours, maybe a tad lower.
Talladega900 31-10-11, 08:15 AM On the black Commemorative, I've got a set of custom springs on adjustible mounts built by Brad of KCSaab, and on the SE 'vert, a set of G-Max out of a certain vendor banned from this site (they're out of business now anyway so I hear). Both spring kits are now NLA.

88saab900s,
I'm from Phillipsburg. It's in Warren County, off I-78. I was thinking about taking it to Maaco, and having it done black, or yellow.

I was thinking the same, black or yellow... decided to go the easier way and stay black. I still wish that I did it other way.... right yellow with black wheels + spg body kit looks great in my eyes.

I know exactly where that is, I'm from Raritan, may have even seen you on the road haha. If you get your car painted black make sure the body is smooth as can be or it will show every imperfection.... downfall with black paint
I saw a yellow c900 near peddlers village (bucks county area) about 3-4 months ago... yellow with a SPG kit in black and black (if I remember correctly) wheels, don't know it it was a true SPG but the yellow was awesome on it, if that person is on the forum please post some pics!!!

I'm really considering the Yellow, with black wheels. I need tires too, BAD. I want a window louver too, but they're a bit too expensive for me. The ONLY time I ever saw another c900 was when I was going to Best Buy. I was in the lane to turn, off Rt.22, and it sped by me on the right, going like 90mph. It was awesome. It looked like it had wide tires, or wheel spacers. The wheels were almost leaving the wheel well.
Oh yeah, and my English teacher drives a c900 convert. Turbo. I'm jelly. But he doesn't drive it to school, so I can't ever see it.
88saab900s 31-10-11, 01:58 PM My SPG came with the saab louvers, really brings out the car. keep an eye out for a Tally Red SPG with louvers on it and you may have found me then ;ol; I do see a number of them around town and out on 22, have a green and white hard top and a few gray and white verts, seen a number of them on 22, always see a white 4 door around the college, some staff member has a green vert at rv ;ol;
with that in mind keep c900's alive!

I'm always checking Craigslist to see if I can find another. I wouldn't mind finding a reasonably priced vert turbo(manual).

West of fort collins, there is a massive reservoir called "horsetooth". It's right between the first and second ridges of the rocky mountains.
Needless to say, it's superb driving road.
By the way, is it sacrilegious if I install a non-spg bonnet on a spg? It has the saab badge on both sides.

I don't know if you get rub on the spring perches on the Brad's Adjustables, but a number of us have and have had to swap out for replacements or just put up with it. It doesn't really hurt anything but the perch itself, but the grinding and groaning was very apparent with every bump, and it just made the car feel problematic, even though I knew that wasn't the case. This only affected the front perches. In the end, we got fed up and Squaab made modifications to an Afco weight jack that performed the same function but without the grind; it was also lighter. I've been happy with it since, and I have heard good things from the others as well. The rear remains Brad's Adjustables, but are mainly off-the-shelf parts from Afco anyhow.

Hey, thanks Keith! I really like the updated look too!
Anyone considering the clear turn signal housings, be aware that if you have cornering lights, you will have to drill out the hole for the light socket. I used a 1 1/16 (I think a 1 1/8th might do even better) hole saw and cut out the notches by hand with an exacto saw. A little fiddly, but doable after a 6 pack.
88saab900s 05-11-11, 02:43 AM that grill looks great color matched to the car! A+

Ran across an '84 c900 T8 hatchback, with the light silvery blue paint and manhole cover wheels, that the junk yard was selling as a whole car. I couldn't tell if it was EFI or carb, since it was already on hold when I went and asked about it, but the interior leather was quite nice for its age and only had a few cracks in it. It was burgundy interior, and a 5-speed, and all in all the body condition was quite good. There was a tiny bit of rust sprouting from one of the rear fenders, but that's it...it still had some good tires on, so it seemed to me like it was well maintained. When I asked the yard what was wrong with it, they shrugged and told me they don't know, sometimes they just get donations...she didn't seem too willing to help, given it was already on hold. I was thinking it was still a bit pricy, but it was a very nice example of an earlier T8 car. Oh well.

Used cars are not cheap here, what everyone else can get anywhere else for $200 would cost at least $700 here, and $1000 anywhere else would cost about $2500-$3000 here, so you can use that to gauge. Sorry for the crappy photos though, but I wasn't expecting to see this car at the yard...all I had on me was my camera phone!

There never was a carb turbo Saab. I think carburetted 900's were never sold in North America, certainly not after 1981. The only carb was the 2.0 8v single carb and the 2.0 8v twin carb (GLs). The choke handle was in that little fuzzy tray next to the dome light swich aft of the gearshift.

that's the hardest part, getting it straight and clean, spraying is the easy part, so half your battle is done already.

They are fairly rare. A lot sell cheaply found in barns. Sold as sears Allstate in US. Very unique engin setup. Two pistons share a combustion chamber. Parts are impossible to obtain except from Austria. Very expensive the euro is a bad bad currency. Lol.

What a fantastic looking car. That's the first time I've seen that color, and it looks great. It looks like a fun area to drive in.
QuickOrange 25-12-11, 10:36 PM Thanks! It is a really fun drive. I normally reserve it for my motorcycle since normal cars are usually pretty sluggish going that route. I only had two issues: I got stuck behind all the sluggish cars, and the thinner air didn't agree too much with the 900- but that goes for any NA vehicle.

I agree, my previous c900 (which was N/A) lost power above 7k feet but still had enough juice to maintain speed, even though it had 400K miles...
The SPG's peak power doesn't decrease with altitude, but turbo lag increases a little bit..
I've driven it on the highest roads in the rocky mountains (including trail ridge road at 11k feet) and it makes it impossible to enjoy the same roads with different cars.
Looks like you went up to rollinsville- I once drove my previous c900 up rollins pass...

Is it just me or is something just not quite right with the badges on the right side rear (900 S) ?
I thought the 900 S was a bit further to the right and the 16V badge rests underneath????
Nice car though!

Good eye! I take Clear Creek Road (HWY 6) to 119 to 36 to 25. Obviously the fun stops once I hit Boulder proper. I'd love to just get a slight boost to make up for the lack of air density. I bet this car is a little screamer at sea level, even NA. I hate NA vehicles up that high though. I've had my bike up to 14k, and if it could talk, I would've gotten an earful, lol.
B202, you might be right. It'd just be one more thing in the continuing PO saga. It always cracks me up with all the badges back there.
Ludichris, are you going to have to modify your front bumper to fit that? Looks sharp regardless!
EDIT: B202, I think you're right. I did a little photo research and it appears that the 16 Valve emblem goes under the 900 S, which should be further right. Nice catch, thanks!

socal1200r 28-12-11, 03:38 PM That's one big FMIC! Being a Saab newbie, all I know is the c900 T16s come with a factory IC, oil cooler, and AT cooler, for those that have an AT. In the one pic taken directly from the front, the small black rectangular coolers located on the lower left and right are the engine oil cooler and transmission cooler, yes?
On an otherwise stock (or mildly tuned?) engine, what is the main benefit of replacing the factory IC with a much larger FMIC like this one? I understand that the air will be much cooler, since it's mounted outside the engine compartment, and will have larger volume. But with an otherwise stock engine (stock ECU, turbo, exhaust, etc), what's the benefit to be gained from going with a significantly bigger IC?
A Saab newbie wants to know!
Keith509 28-12-11, 10:48 PM Last night, somebody decided to dump a bag of flour on my car. It was raining, so it became solid, and made a huge mess. :(
So, after work tonight, I took my car to the car wash(in 30 degree(F) weather), and gave it a good cleaning.

Coating seals with Glycerin works well to keep them soft and to stop them from sticking in freezing weather. Silicone spray also works for seals and a must for the antenna mast. Extend the antenna and with a rag behind the antenna (so you don't spray the car) spray the antenna well and wipe dry. Let the antenna go up and down a couple of times and repeat the spraying then you are ready for winter.

I just got them. They look like an incredibly tight fit. I want to get them on as soon as possible. The doors look nasty without them.
I just got them. They look like an incredibly tight fit. I want to get them on as soon as possible. The doors look nasty without them.
The clips go on the trim first, with the weatherstrip, not the door. Otherwise you'll never get the trim on properly, if at all.
Keith509 29-12-11, 03:00 PM The PO had the clips already on the door. On the trim pieces I have, there are also metal clips inside them. Weird. Should I remove the clips on the door, then just install the trim with its preinstalled clips?
Yes, just check if all clips are there. It could be a pain to install...
Take the clips off the door. Install the clips on the trim and clip on the weatherstrip. Then install it on the door pushing down firmly with a piece of smooth wood or similar so to not mark the strip. Count the clip vestige marks on the trim to find out original positions and quantity.
I am really falling in love with the look of your car.. haha

The car is actually still primered. It is to be painted soon.
The lights(Hella 500FF) were mounted by simply flipping the stock foglight brackets upside down. This allows you to attach the bolt through the fins in the grill. That's the best explanation I can give. They fit pretty well without any additional fabrication. I wired them into the stock foglight switch, as well.

I don't have any issues with the hood. The lights clear the hood just fine. When the hood is all the way opened, there is about a 1'' gap between the hood, and the lights. It just fits perfect, in my case.

NOT A FAN SORRY; I here in hot climates they really help reduce cabin heat but I just think they are a bit to primitive for the later models. If it was a pre-face lift 900 then in my book it earns a pass but anything after 87 the louvre should be left off; but thats my opinion that doesn't matter much atall..
Nice car overall...

ajochum 16-01-12, 08:35 PM I don't recall if I ever told this story here. I had a 1977 Datsun 280ZX 2+2 and bought it new. In 1978 or 79 I took it back to the dealer to have the oil changed and a few other minor things. I got a call that day or the next and the dealer sheepishly explained that they had two 280s in the shop that day and the cars got mixed up. Seems they put the rear louvers on my car by accident.
Of course I was upset, and they offered to either remove and repaint or give me them for free. I didn't like them on the car so I had them repaint it.
I will say that I do like louvers on the Boss 302 and 428s, but otherwise, not my cup of tea. However, it certainly is a personal decision and I make no negative remarks about them.
PS - Nice car.

Very Nice!
I have come to the conclusion that I defiantly do not want clear corners or side markers! This does not work well on grey, black or white cars. Other colors it is just fine.
I have also come to the conclusion that I need a rear louver and a whale tail. Also, if and when I get a repaint, I am having the vanity strip on the front and rear bumpers filled in and smoothed out.
Here is my new to me 900! Only rust is in the rear pass. door.
Ahh, the flat-noses seem to get rarer and rarer as people convert them to slant-noses. It's all personal preference, of course, but the slant-noses just seem conformist to me in a world full of slant-nosed cars (esp. japanese). It just doesn't seem to belong to a car that bucks all trends and yet maintains engineering superiority and a timeless design. My 2c.
But hope you're loving it, the c900 is an absolutely amazing winter/snow car, flat- or slant-nosed!

flat nose is sexier :cheesy:

Don't think so.
Wind resistance and downforce, the designed the front airdam on aero's so the aero's (SPG's) could hit 200kph and not handle like a sponge I think. At least that's what their brochures claimed, and the airflow kits were meant to be better than stock for handling, not just cosmetics ;)

**** man, I want to convert my slant nose into a flat nose!
Am guessing that the slant is for the "newer" models that might have had more impact resistance in case of an accident?
Don't think so. It's just for kerbside appeal to show the new buyer that the car is newer than the neighbours. Car manufacturers do it every year to keep car sales up. Although your statement does have some credence. Modern safety requirements compel manufacturers to minimise injuries to pedestrians in the event of accident.
One day I dream of stumbling across a 4 door pre face lift aero kit.
I saw one on ebay on a car for $4k... Slightly too expensive, and on the other side of Australia. 4000km away.
This too is my dream. But if you talk about the holy grail of rare parts for the c900, I think this is it. Forget the whale tail and the Super Aeros, the 4-door flat-nose SPG kit is so far the most elusive part I have never seen. The only reason why I even believe in its existence is through two separate photos I saw of unmodified cars...wow. Apart from that, I believe an SC member had his friend fabricate one from fibreglass by using the 3-door panels as the platform. It looked really good, but you'd have to go searching for that thread now.

I hit 225km/hr in mine once before I pissed my pants ;oops: This was before I had the front air dam, so it was stock flat-nose body-work with just a front valence instead (though with the 3" FMIC, my T3 Super 60, and a tweaked APC). Good thing I didn't push it any further, the tires were apparently H-rated and 10 years old! They were also not balanced for such high speeds, so although the car handled fine, it was shaking like mad, which is what freaked me out. I think I'd be fine now with my mesh rims since they have better tires. What scared me more was that at 225km/hr, the c900 wasn't done yet, and I'm quite certain it would easily have gone past 240km/hr (way past the speedo)! There was still so much torque at that speed! :o

Amen brother!!! I am a firm believer in keeping things origional if they are even somewhat rare. Some things are ok to mod the crap out of, but just buy a slant if thats what you like, and sell your flat to someone who will appreceate it for what it is.;ol;
SaabFox 14-02-12, 04:03 PM just joined love this site here is my 85t "jack"
sweetsaab 14-02-12, 04:13 PM Clean ride. Does it come with a hood?
Looks sexy! I hope it doesn't come with a hood!
SaabFox 15-02-12, 12:39 AM okay a few more and well the hood is an option better for high speed for sure
after having a few flat noses i went slantnose on my 85 build also went the '89 after route on the axles
KurBads 15-02-12, 02:20 AM your IC is just by the turbo ... doesn`t it heat soak massively? Why such never seen before placement? I`d have left it in the original position or installed a FMIC.

:o Look at the plumbing. Looks like a two standard turbo IC's ...one on either side of the car.

Tweek's Turbos 22-02-12, 12:37 PM I have a 5 door flatnose turbo, I haven't seen another in Australia for sale or otherwise.
I do however see significantly more 5 door later model turbos with rounded bumper kits. YUUUCK

I snagged on of the flat nose 5 door turbos nearby, but it has gone off to my mechanic as his own car now.

They were only sold in the states for the first 2 or 3 years.
cooper-davis 27-02-12, 07:44 PM Washed them both finally. I swear the last time I washed the sedan was last May:o. Stinking drought and water shortages. On of these days I'll have to take them some place pretty for pictures.

I am not a fan at all for flat nose SAABS; but there is something about your black one I cant shake!
that thing has tremendous personality. It sits there like "Look at me"!
I hope thats the car that gets the three spoke Turbo Wheels. It will be smashing with that bike rack!;ol;
Just imagine if you compounded that paint and waxed it:o; Holy Smokes it would be slammin!!!!

The paint is still in pretty decent shape, but the hood is cracking, and the whole right side has etched marks from water spray.
Once I get rid of 2 more bicycles I'll start on the wheels:) I'm still thinning out the herd. I put louvers on the black hatch as well:cheesy:. I still kind of like the manhole covers, but the Areo/SPG rims will look pretty slick. I'm going to get in there with a tooth brush and my scouring pad and clean out all of those little holes in the manhole covers. I did one so far and it looks pretty good.
I still need to replace my chrome strip on the back bumper.
robcourson1 27-02-12, 08:31 PM shoot i wish my 88 was a flat nose, ive been searching for parts and 83 spg airdams and both bumpers.

Nice!!! I love the flat nose. I dont think I would want an aero unless it were an SPG. Seems wierd for folks to not like them. I guess it's like the folks who told me to put some bling chrome rims on my matching numbers all stock 63 split window vette. Some folks just dont get it. Keep the manhole covers. They rock as well!!

I sort of like the look of the black one with the lugnut covers off. Might have to take mine off. They need a paint job anyway.

For some reason, I thought that manhole covers were the ones that looked like steelies with a 4-hole machined steel hubcap in the middle? Aren't these TRX wheels? At any rate, these are awesome wheels, they give the car a very aggressive rally-racing look, as per early OZ's (which were white though). Keep the look!

I do need to repaint the caps. That's why they're off. I am missing one of the lug nut caps which kind of irks me. I'll have to track some extras down at some point.
Yup these are considered the manhole covers according to this (http://peacetek.net/saab-wheels/#spg) site anyway:
SAAB 900 US Turbo Wheel - otherwise known as the "24 spoker" or "manhole cover." First Saab wheel with conical seat lugnuts [excluding the TRX (http://peacetek.net/saab-wheels/trx/index.html), of course!]. Factory installed on 1982-1984 900 Turbo & 1982-1986 900S. I just picked this up last Saturday, February 25th. My first Saab! I've wanted a Saab convertible for soooo many years, and surprisingly, the older ones seem to be the most affordable, I had a 2001 Mustang convertible (not a bad car, but the seat belts locked up constantly which REALLY HURT when driving over a pothole) and I refused to go anywhere near a Sebring because of the Chrysler transmissions. This is a great, great car. We all adore it already.

Ah, yes, the good ol' tripod site. Almost forgot about that. By the same site (using the TRX link) I found the wheels I was referring to (front passenger side); perhaps they are less wheels and more hubcaps!
http://peacetek.net/saab-wheels/trx/saab-trx-old-pepe.jpg
Still, those "manhole covers" can look pretty aggressive, and look very similar to the OZ Rally racing rims I was referring to. Unfortunately, I could not find any decent photos of them not on another car, so I apologize for posting a non-c900 in this thread!

yup it was the chrome one, started to bubble and crack. I sanded it down smooth and got the chrome off, then hit it with some black spray paint. I also cut the fins out and put mesh behind it.

Mockles 09-03-12, 05:07 PM Actually, I inherited (bought) her 11 years ago, in upstate New York, and in that time, she has been going through a heck of a cycle.....running, dying, sitting, running, dying, sitting, etc.........replaced her HG about 5 years ago. Roof works. Brought her to CA on a come-along. Drove her around in Los Angeles, but the battery was dying on me all the time, and I thought it was an electrical leak someplace.
So, she sat for over three years, all through the latest upheaval in prices.....
Garage near me found that it was the fuel pumps that were both dead, and a clogged up fuel filter......the starter was killing the battery over and over and over again but the engine wasn't getting any fuel at all.
Replaced both pumps, filter, oil change, new battery all last week, and she is running yet again. Can't imagine how many "Junk Cars Towed" business cards have been stuck to the fence on the property, or how many times the roommates have seen the PBS commercials for donating your car.....
skucera 09-03-12, 07:44 PM Ah, NY sunlight is much less searing than L.A. sun, so that would explain the rather nice leather. It's good to hear you're putting it back on the road. This time of year is ideal "top down" weather in L.A., as I remember from my time there. Not too hot like later in the year. Enjoy.
