Who said "Mati"?
I immediately had the same thought; oh no, neon lights! Then I looked at the photo and had to chuckle. It does beg the question - just how long is your extension cord?!

But really, if you want to celebrate Christmas, why don't you put one of those glowing stars inside the car or something?
Either way, nice Saab!

OK, I'll work on an LED lit emblem to put in the back window for next year. At least I didn't attach a fake tree complete with flocking to the roof:D

The h-patter center pops out and its painted on the plastic part that comes out, I wet sanded it all off, and made the image in photoshop, printed it, put it on the shifter and popped the clear plastic (after sanding it) back on.

the current headlights are the era correct, just not for the us market;ol;
next plan is to lower it and get some wider wheels..along with a slew of maintenance to make sure this car lasts another 25 years and still looks damn good!
DurocShark 15-02-11, 10:49 PM I hate the stock US headlights. On my old VW Bus I replaced the old sealed beam style with Hella H4 lights. Even with stock wiring and crappy US Silverstar bulbs they were MUCH better.
I want to do something similar with my 86 900s. But I want those one piece housings instead of just replacing my bulbs.
Are they available in the US anywhere? Was there a year that I can swap from that was sold here?
DanComden 16-02-11, 12:07 PM Three years ago I installed the Hella headlamps on my '85 -- one of the best and easiest upgrades out there without having to track down European lights. It was a significant improvement over the crappy sealed beams, and it's easy to swap bulbs depending on your needs. Got mine at Susquehanna Motorsports (http://www.rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=744) (link is to the kit).
shockrocker13321 16-02-11, 12:29 PM speaking of lights, would it be easy, or a pain to put some fog-lights on? and would it even look good?
DanComden 16-02-11, 12:47 PM My theory is that the stock fog lights were installed for cosmetic reasons and to sell replacements to drivers who bash them on parking curbs. I find them to be essentially useless for illumination. Others may disagree.
The stock brackets are great for attaching much better fog lights such as the Hella 550 lamp.

Yeah, those are the ones I was talking about. I just hate the stupid little lights next to the bulbs in the stock configuration. I blew a lens off last week washing the car!

Glad I stumbled upon this. The low beams on my '83 are almost as bright as the high beams on my NG900. The high beams on the '83 seem, well, VERY bright. I was eying this kit for when one of my sealed beams goes or I have a couple extra bills around, but it's hard to imagine anything brighter than what's on the car now. Or maybe the terrible light throw on my NG900 makes everything else look that much better :confused:.
I'll have to look into this.

It certainly is a rare car indeed, yes 12 made. However, they were not factory installed packages, these were dealer-installed, hence why they were only native to Australia.
It's not my favorite look, but it certainly rates up there in the rareness scale! Up there along with the pre-facelift airflow kit and the 4-door SPG side skirt packages!
li Arc
EnduroTroll 22-02-11, 04:13 PM Arc - sorry no, that's not correct. A very large dealership here at the time, "Ken Matthews Saab", were commissioned by Saab-Scania Australia to offer a hand in the engineering package design because of their size and on-hand expertise. Saab-Scania didn't have an in-company engineering department as they were a distributor only at that time. Another company, "Purvis Cars" were then likewise commissioned by Saab to develop the exterior package. It was NOT simply a concocted "dealer special" at all, and was actually considered a factory-edition car. KM did the work, but only because Saab-Scania itself here in Australia was not equipped to be anything more than a distribution office.
Here is the model brochure addendum from Saab-Scania Australia - making it an official factory-specific model to Saab-Scania Australia.

AUSSIE900 24-02-11, 05:23 AM looks right I know :( but practicality :)
If you are in Melbourne.. we should talk . I may be able to assist re a good shell ...
AUSSIE900 24-02-11, 05:35 AM "Purvis Cars" were then likewise commissioned by Saab to develop the exterior package.
Purvis Cars were a well known Melbourne company ( early 80's) who manufactured a fibreglass kit car from memory called a **Eureka**
they had doors that opened liked wings . I remember as a brash teenager dreaming of owning one **SO HOT ** ... To be disuaded by my father who considered them absolute trash ., .. From memory he was proven correct many times over . later he got it very wrong on Saabs , :)http://www.eurekacarclub.com.au/pics/2830.jpg
EnduroTroll 24-02-11, 07:18 AM Indeed - the Eureka was one of my faves too when I was younger. On the Eureka, I seem to remember the gloss was diminished a little by the necessity for a broomstick to be hidden down the side of the seat which was required to hold the door/roof mechanism up in a decent breeze. Gotta love it :)
Australia had a great short-run kit industry going back in the 70/80's.
Said mechanism: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwRCvlQVKQE
My brother nearly built one, but decided on the Bolwell Nagari instead.

Ha, I haven’t even gotten my 9-3 running yet, it is now under the snow... I have been driving still the C900 vert... I just got back from a 700 km trip out to Pembroke. Of course the car ended up pissing gas on top of the engine on the trip so I bought a fire extinguisher on my way home... I need new O-rings on the fuel injectors where they meet the fuel rail it seems. I’ve got studded snows on the convertible so it isn’t so bad ;)

Haha it's a typo I meant 4 door sedans :lol:
In US/Canadian market they only sold the 5-door in '79 and '80, when the 4-door sedan came out in '81 they stopped marketing the 5-dr :p
DustinS 28-02-11, 02:17 PM Looks like a good candidate for a restoration though; it doesn't look rotted and that's pretty rare these days. I like that color too ;ol;
I had an MKI Jetta and an 1986 VW Scirocco in that color a long time ago.
at least it doesn't look rotted out, unfortunately it is :/ sorta. not as bad as the one's i see come in for service, but still not perfect, if i had the money and time i would strip it and restore it.
Here's a few of mine (albeit without my good aero wheels on);

Love the exhaust and grille;ol;
I love how little differences really make the car's unique to there owners:cheesy:
Cheers One More.
Yes I've not seen anyone thats quite done the grille the way I have or exhaust on their c900 yet and I like it :)
and a couple more;
Nice work. The aeros look good - how are your other aeros different?
I have some aeros on the way for my 90 SPG, which is black as well. Our cars will look fairly similar once I've got them on. I'll post some pictures in a couple of weeks. Again, well done.;ol;
euromobile900 06-03-11, 07:42 PM and a couple more;
Nice rear mudflaps! They look different from standard ones, very compatible with the SPG/Aero kit.
SPGreg - my other aeros are grey centres with polished rims but I have put them on my 'vert. Look forward to seeing pics of yours.
Euromobile - They are Saab ones but from the 'additioanal accessories catalogue' and would not have come on car originally. To be honest I've never been sure if I like them and keep meaning to take them off to see what I prefer just not got around to it!!
B202NUT 07-03-11, 05:55 AM SPGreg - my other aeros are grey centres with polished rims but I have put them on my 'vert. Look forward to seeing pics of yours.

Funny these flaps are on the 91 SE I just purchased and I am also considering whether to keep them on or not. SOmedays I like them and others not so much:roll:.
Nice Ride;ol;...
B202NUT - Cheers. The more I look at them, the more I don't like them! I think I don't see them too often (where I normally park I always tend to approach the car from the front) so sorta forget about them!!
gildedsplinters 10-03-11, 10:38 PM Was tough moving from an 06 aero SC manual to a 93 turbo auto... especially since it started out lemans blue with a white hood... well... it didn't start due to the key stuck in the ignition... but... for less than $500 bucks... and that was with a new top!
Now, nearly finished... just slapped a 2.5 in. cat back exhaust with a dynomax muffler (was on sale and only thing that would fit @ local Advance/Autozone...) Still need to iron out the creak from drivers front side, ball joint(s) I suspect maybe? But it probably needs shocks, thus lowering springs all around, some polished lip aero's or super aeros, whichever won't stick out of the wheel wells if I don't have SPG panels... oh... and a 5 spd... and hood release.. SUCH A PAIN NOT HAVING IT.
I did align the hood and headlights after this photo - MUCH better... ready for the beach in summer.

Thanks! This is an "SPG Convertible" -- in quotes because I don't think that it was actually sold with that terminology. I've not researched that.
It has all of the SPG stuff on it -- the kit, the color combination, red box EPC, lowered, Aero wheels, etc.
It is as good as it gets! Lucky to have it.

Maybe not over there, but plenty of T16S convertibles elsewhere - and cosmetically identical 'verts (and tintops) with LPTs or even n/a engines, especially towards the end of production.
eggsngrits 21-03-11, 08:42 AM Someone mentioned painting a car, kit and all, completely black.
These photos are crappy, but just forwarded these by Swade from an Aussie car listing site:

I really do love the gloss spg bumpers! Does it just take a ton of prep?
eggsngrits 21-03-11, 02:57 PM I really do love the gloss spg bumpers! Does it just take a ton of prep?
Actually, if you look at the "regular" bumper / kit it has a very smooth surface. It's just that it has a metallic gray semi-gloss coating. That is, I don't think it needs much prep.
I refinished my 1988 bumpers with the SEM vinyl dye. You'd simply need to get the gloss black rather than the grey. It is made to cover plastic. The coating MUST flex to remain intact. The SEM stuff is formulated for that.
http://www.yourautotrim.com/semdye.html
(This shop is great, by the way, QUICK ship!)
The key: LIGHT (and I mean LIGHT) coats. Maybe five or six required to completely cover. Let it dry several hours between. (It will be dry to the touch in about 20-30 minutes, but let it really dry before the second application.)
So I took the plunge and picked up a 1991 Platana Gray 900 vert a few weeks back. Apart from a few niggly things, the car is in great shape. My GF and I went to Albequerque to pick the car up and commenced driving back to Chicago (about 1,500 miles). The driving in northern NM is absolutely sublime. The road from Taos to Raton, through the Sangre de Cristo mountains, was an absolute showstopper. What a wonderful way to get to know this car.
Anyway, here are a few trip pics:

From my experience, I would say Yes. There is a lot of wavyness in the SPG panels. With a Gloss Black everything has to be perfect to look good or it stands out.

Oh wow! That convertible is just beautiful! :o
Personally I think the Airflow/Carlsson body kit is better suited for painting in color than the Aero/SPG body kit. It just doesn't look right when it's the same color as the car.

Nice car!
A realy good Buff, Polish, Glaze, and Wax will do a world of difference. From here the body looks plum. Try that first, that way you can save the bonnet protective strip that is close to impossible to source these days;ol;.
Saabturbo92 06-04-11, 05:41 AM Well that is the where the picture is deceiving, rust is starting to get the best of her living in upstate NY where there is a regular dose of salt all winter, the trunk (under the spare) has a rotted gash, and the doors have rotted bottoms, I think it is still salvageable though, some body work, and paint would go a long way, my Saab mechanic who sold me the car for $1,500 told me the car would rust away before the motor gave out, I am pretty amazed at the age of the car and the motor does not leak, or burn oil, tranny rebuilt in 06, all in all previous owner put around 6k into the car (since 06) before I picked it up, she traded it in when she let the car roll into a tree smashing the hatchback. I commute switching weeks with a buddy and I miss driving when it is not my week! The F150 only gets 17mpg, I can get almost 30 with this car but average 26mpg cause I love winding the Turbo!;ol;

x2, I can't add a thing to that statement. How did Australia get so many cool models that we never got in the US?

Going to have even more white in the future, looking into getting some 17x7" 5 (or 6) spoke rims, with glossy white centres and polished lips, i have a picture of the end result in my head and it looks quite the piece :)
N.E. Swede:
I'm pretty sure that the EMS was available in the US aswell, This one though has had some serious makeovers lol
Heres an example of what it looked like when i bought it 3 years ago, only in a lot worse condition:

skucera 21-04-11, 09:53 PM Lovely car. Lovely horse. Lovely daughter, what little we can see of her anyway. :) Perhaps I should post pictures of my car, my horse, and my daughters....
And a beautiful horse farm too. Where in the Czech Republic is that? Whenever I see pictures from there, I always wonder if it is somewhere where my ancestors lived. I know the names of the cities, towns, and villages, and it is fun to look on the internet at pictures of those places.

It is at Svarov. It is very small village near Prague, west direction, about 20 kms far from Ruzyne Airport. There are three horse farms one by other...
skucera 21-04-11, 10:44 PM Wow, by the standards of the western US, you're very close to three towns where my ancestors came from. I had some from Prague. I had an ancestor from Tábor, another from Pelhrimov, and yet another from a tiny village called Vlkosovice, almost between those two towns but further south. All three of those are to the southwest of Prague. The only Czech outlier was from Plzen. My uncle visited all those towns comfortably in a morning in a rental car 10 years ago, and spent the better part of a week enjoying Prague and its ancient beauties.
Perhaps someday after the kids are grown, perhaps then I can travel there and see the place. Your farm is beautiful. I love rolling countryside like that.

Do you have a K&N Cone behind the grilled fender?
borderwave2 26-04-11, 01:24 PM This one sadly isn't mine, it belongs to a fellow Saaber in Kentucky, some people on here may know him.
I will say this about the car, it is absolutely f***ing immaculate. The only mods he has are tasteful, like tint, the hood paint, smoked clears, and a built engine. It's not even T5, just a good old LH 2.4. You know how all 900's have some swamp/oilspill like residue under the trunk floor? Well his is lined with carpet for the spare bulp kit (oem accessory) and other goodies. This car is CLEAN. He has the foam trunk dividers, and everything. All sorts of accessories that no one bought and are really hard to find. This car is truly an inspiration. It looks so mean. Todd is going to Carlisle this year so you can stop by and it there. I'm sure he won something last year. I can't imagine that car not taking 1st place...

The "leather" on my glovebox has a few bubbles beneath it... maybe thinking just swap everything out entirely.

now you've got me looking:)
It's not a bad way to go since the replacement rubber is $140 on thesaabsite. I've looked at a few of the color/ wood grain/ metal choices. What do you think would look good- compliment an interior of a 84 3 door with the tan interior/ leather seats?
this (http://www.dashkitmall.com/images/materials/LBW_combo.jpg) maybe?
There were a few that have just black, but I think it's shiny. I'd rather have something less shiny. And I don't even really know about the brushed aluminum or steel look. I like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200343952989&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT) set because it comes with so many trim pieces.
I like a stock look, but maybe something else would go nicely? Opinions?
hkayssi 29-04-11, 05:26 PM IMHO, OEM color with a wooden gear knob looks best with a tan interior :cheesy:
Especially if the door cards are black with tan inserts

I do like the look of the car when the rubber trim has been removed, but my autobody guys told me that they're there to protect from door dings from other cars, and asked me if I was sure I wanted it removed. I did change my mind after that, and they kept the rubber strips on when they repainted my doors (yes, they're not a very high end place) so now I can no longer remove them. At least, not without another door repaint, which was around $800.
Looking back now, I should have just had them remove it altogether then do the paint, and deal with the dings as they come; there is a good paintless dent place that I went to once here that removed all dings and dents from my doors for a very reasonable price.

Very nice, definitely fix her up...lots of rare items on that car! It reminds me of the one I found in the yard once, with the clip seat belts and the dual-vent hood. I recall quite the response when I posted a photo of it up (in this thread too)!

I'm with ya... My lower trim is still there, its the very thin strip that runs on the top of the door line that I removed. It was sagging and pretty faded so it looks a lot nicer now without it. I'll keep the lower trim since it is in very good shape.
More pictures are a must ;ol;.

ludichris001 11-06-11, 03:33 AM Mods, can we please have this thread sticky'd?
Pretty please?
:)
one more 11-06-11, 04:14 AM I agree
DurocShark 11-06-11, 09:45 AM While I agree, it seems to be doing OK on its own... ;)
ludichris001 11-06-11, 11:19 AM Yes, but although this is one of the most popular threads here, it goes quiet every now and then, which means you have to go searching for it if you want to update. After scrolling through 9 pages of threads I finally found it again. I just feel that it would be convenient to have this thread up the top permanently.
A few more now that the car is a little cleaner... Got these up on TSL and figured I'd post here too. I drive this car more than my stage 3 NG900 ;ol;.

I must ask though, why "Triumph"? The engine has evolved quite a lot since the Triumph days.
Yes it has, and for the better. It's like putting "Noah's Ark" on the side of the QE2.:cheesy:
Tailspin 04-07-11, 12:33 PM Thanks Swimdude! I know, it's all in good fun, but wouldn't it be amusing if the QE2 said Noahs Arc on the back? I guess I have a very sideways sense of humor..
The project is back on, but getting started is slow. Here she is, waiting for me to service her! She's a bit shy though, since she's a bit naked right now!

I know, I know, the hood is askew, but that's pretty low priority right now...and it closes fine, just not as smoothly as a straight one. Still need to find and fix the oil pressure problem, then pull the tranny again and fix the input shaft bearing assembly. Updates will be in my project thread. Otherwise, she's just raring to go! Beauty shots when she's all up and running again will come in a few months...hopefully less!

I've been trying for years to make sense of why the C900 went out of production in 1993.
The explanation that I've come up with, has to do with a change in the value system of the upper middle class, which was Saab's customer base.
* In the 1960s and 70s, money was in short supply, and so ruggedness and durability were valued even by buyers of new cars.
* In the 90s and 00s up to 2008, money supply almost exploded. As a result, excellent engineering was no longer enough for Saab's customer group. They wanted luxury. They wanted bells and whistles. They wanted a car exterior that was modern enough and flashy enough, to show off their new purchasing power.
For me, that's how the market for the C900 disappeared.
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/270616_10150238187041105_635206104_7622415_5432743 _n.jpg
(Our new US car: I've never seen a cleaner interior or better original exterior in an 18 year old vehicle)
Saab started out in the 1940s and 50s with a focus on innovative techniques and designs in the bilding of car bodies and drivetrains. When they launched the 99, it was so far ahead of its time that it went on to stay on the production line for the next 27 years with only one major facelift (the lengthening of the front to make the 900 in the 1970s).
During that 27-year period, Saab learned almost everything that could be learned about engine-building, and installed it in their cars. 27 years was long enough to find and remedy every single weakness that the C900 had ever had. It would have been perfect - if only the customers' value system had stayed the same.
Mine has - and that's why I still love my C900. She and I have become anachronisms together.

PS: When people ask me today what I (as a known Saab-freak) think about the current problems in Trollhättan, I tend to say that the company that I loved, died in 1993. Under Saab's new GM ownership, focus changed from engineering excellence (delivering longer-lasting value for the car's owner), to business economics (getting more money out of him). Cars became more expensive to design, cheaper to build, and more expensive to repair. They became more packed with luxuries, but at the same time also flimsier. Mechanics went from being repairmen to being component swappers. Gradually, the life expectancy of a new Saab dropped by over a quarter: From 15-20 years to 10-15.
Is there anything to love about the new Saabs? Sure. They're fantastic - as long as you value money the way people started doing in the 1980s and 90s. The number of people who can afford to do that, however, is dropping like a stone, and I've never counted myself among them.
Wow, your new US vert is a stunner - just gorgeous. I think I tipped you on that eBay auction. I agree on the quality of the C900. I can't believe my '91 is 20 years old when I'm driving it - so solid and reassuring. I can't imagine my '04 9-5 is going to feel that good 2024! :o

(Even the wood effect ashtray has shown itself to be extremely useful, in addition to decorative. The surface is good enough that it holds on to the suction cup of the GPS attachment.)

Yikes! What happened to it?
justDoug 08-07-11, 07:02 PM Yikes! What happened to it?
It belonged to a friend of mine. He sunk some money into her for "an engine rebuild" not long before getting into a wreck. The difference in the insurance settlement amount (they declared it a "total loss") was only $500 less if he kept the car, so he had it towed home and parked it in the garage thinking he'd straighten her out "one day".
Well, that was 8 or 9 years ago, so I am the proud owner of a 1991 Saab 900 with 120k miles on the odometer and an engine I'm assuming had a head-gasket or maybe the top-end replaced (I can't imagine it was anything more serious than that).
Here's my '87 N/A at the local autocross in Hershey, PA. Not the fastest, but not the slowest. Either way, it was a hoot to drive around the course!
