Yeah, that was my first plate... lasted onto 3 other cars before getting retired. Now my plate says JA37VGN and the plate before that was 9KAERO.

Just bought this 1993 saab 900i convertible, 188k on the clock, my first saab, hopefully not the last, great vehicle for the climate down here in Perth, Western Australia.

I have a few questions that I will post if I don't find any answers thru the forums.

Hope the upload of the picture works :)

Cheers

Hey all! Here's a shot of my new (to me) 1988 900 Convertible! I drove a black hard top years ago and caught the bug. As soon as my company car went away, I came right back to them. I live in Southern Ohio, and flew down to Orlando Florida to take ownership and drive her home! 191k miles, and still drove like a charm all the way home with no trouble!

It's good to be back in a Classic 900.

My little project car. Her name is Abby, and she is a wonderful 1991 900SE Turbo Cabrio. Shes a little rough around the edges, and needs a few beauty parts to make her 100%, but shes a solid runner, and for $935, you really can't complain!

What was wrong with it that was beyond saving?

EDIT: Also you should have posted a pic of the car in it's prime.

The only reason why i sent it to the wrecker was for a peaceful end..
The car was great, driving better than ever before, Especially after its proper dyno tune.
I wanted to sell the car but no on was interested in buying it for the price I wanted... And you Saab Central people kept on telling me that the car is Crap a joke a piece of junk, so i was convinced to get rid of it..

Prime and After pic are exactly the same.. just the intercooler hanging there.

And tell me, did the car really look bad with the stickers and the big 9000 rims in the top picture? - This was my favorite and most enjoyable stage of my 900. <3

Jeez, what a guilt trip for us.

I think the appropriate expression here is 'cutting off your nose to spite your face'.

I've got the same 9000 rims for my coupe. I think they're cool because they are a wide rim, so no criticism from me there.

Not in America ;) Seeing SPG's over here is much more rare than seeing T16S's over there. Especially a 91 Tally SPG. I've only seen 1 in person, and that was at a Saab show and I live in the most heavily populated area for Saabs in the country.

Sweet Commem! Mine is number 116.

You're really not that far from me -- I'm just west of DC and come up to West Chester on business pretty regularly (I'll be up that way next Wed.).

The PO of mine had put all the SPG panels on it and I've just kept it that way, did a full frame-off both on it and the SE 'vert. New leather, paint, repaired some surface rust, and more. (See my previous pics earlier in this thread, #966)

Hope to see you at Carlisle. I'll be there in the Commem with my wife and twin two-year-old boys.

Too bad this one had to go. The body was practically rust-free ... but the engine seized, and my younger daughter's car badly needed new doors and other parts. We stripped it of everything usable, gave it a pair of white doors for its funeral, and said goodbye today.

Aren't your scared because of the soft chassis of the cv. In Germany we usually say to not use the HD shocks, which we call B6, on the cv. They recommend B4, I think the touring here, instead.

Oh, didn't you have a thread somewhere about that steering wheel that you have?

SaabHat93

The emblems I got for like 8 bucks from a link in this thread (http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=179634) ebay number 260567785417. The quality of them is fantastic and they look even better in person.

As for the lights, they are HELLA 500FF driving lights. I found this thread (http://saablink.net/forum/showthread.php?t=42299) to be the most helpful when choosing the lights and installing them. I used the factory fog wiring looms and my grandpa fabricated a set of brackets for them out of 1/4" steel stock. Can't remember how wide it was but they fit perfectly on it. I decided to install them because my fogs kept cracking as well, and the headlight output on my car is just dismal. These are like the sun on a dark road. :cheesy: Very worth it.

Here's a few more.

That's certainly very unique...I'm not a fan of black cars, but the seat colour combinations go well with the look. What seats are those? Those might also work in my red car :p You mention it's an '88, did you back-convert it to a flatnose?

Here's the first pic of the season...not the best, but it'll be out of commission for the next two months when I pull the engine, so better get it in now!

Custom96Avy, are you sure that's an '88? What is the build date inside the driver's door jamb? It seems a little odd to put flatnose SPG parts and all the flatnose front end components onto an '88 with low mileage (which would be slantnose originally).

Edit: Nevermind, I can see that the rear bumper extensions and bumper appear to be slantnose.

Since 2001. It's been my DD pretty much the entire time, & I've managed to add another 105K to the original 139K miles on it.

And that was probably me you saw on 635 as I used to drive that way home from work everyday from Carrollton. Now I take the PGBT to 183, so I miss the whole 635/121 interchange in Grapevine, thankfully. I haven't driven daily on 635 for several years now, so you've probably missed me :)

I believe it's called Cochenille Red, something like colour 127G or something; I'd have to check. But my dad told me it was very popular back then, so there must've been a lot running around. Now, I've never seen another one on the road of the same colour, and I've only seen one other example of it online...my dad's quite surprised after I told him how difficult it is to find this colour. Every hood replacement I've had to date I'd have to had repainted. (wow grammar!) :nono;

About the earlier shot, it was pretty crap...here are some better pics I took today, since it was rain/snowing, and overcast, which makes for much richer colours and more accurate lighting with less glare...so here we are!

After this, she'll be off the streets for 2 months while I get the ol' ticker all nice and healthy again! By then, hopefully she'll also get some clear indicators, I thought I didn't like them as much before but after going back to these after the accident, I do miss them! :cheesy:

I'll also probably get a detail job at the end of summer for her, since she's due for some rust repair, after which 90 days needs to elapse for the paint to cure before detail work is recommended. Maybe she'll look as good as she does in the rain after that!

Lil arc looks good! did u get a repaint? Also you need a lil poke in those rear wheels! :)

Yep, almost all external panels have been repainted (over different times within the past 3 years), except for the right front fender panel; that's still original paint. The rear right quarter panel will be redone again this spring since it's rusting :x But as far as rear wheel camber, I'm not certain I'm prepared to bend the axle for that! You can tell the difference in camber between the front and rear wheels though!

What size are these? I have some 17's and I keep thinking they might be too big, but yours look just right!

These are exactly 17x7's ET 40, running 205/40/17's; the tires are actually incorrectly sized for this car, but I bought them used off some guy after having coveted them for a year, so I thought I'd just replace the tires later. However, I'm thinking I might go with a different mesh wheel, but still...gotta love the mesh! 225/40/17 is just right, but may rub...I'll have think about it a bit.

Here's an updated photo of what's become my wife's daily driver. I posted a photo the day I bought it, just as it was where I found it. It's come a long way since then. It's a black '89 turbo, now with very nice Buffalo Grey leather interior, SPG panels, SPG rims, SPG suspension, and Red APC w/3.0 regulator. It's also a very dependable car which I've not had to do much with since we got it. :)

Sort of a, "99" kind of guy, I've owned many 900s because of their sheer utility. I always wanted a convertible, but never had the scratch to buy one.
Then one day, waking up in the ICU after a near-death experience, I decided, "I'm going to buy a convertible 900, red with a black top". And so I did. My daughter wiggled underneath the perspective car, to check the passenger side lower A-Arm (enthusiasts who live in the snowy areas will know what I'm talking about -- what she was looking for). So then we bought it.
The only problem is, that was five years ago and I've never driven the car! Here is the car:

Why not you silly boy!

Sorry, that was really a set up... the reason I don't drive (yet) is because I'm a quadriplegic. Don't feel bad, I rather set you folks up with my last post, showing me in the passenger seat.
But here's the thing of it; the real meat; the proof that I'm a true enthusiast: five years ago, my wife and I crashed, horribly, in her 9000 CS Turbo. Technically, I was killed in the crash, my lights were out for, some people say like 15 minutes. I could not breathe in, and I remember thinking, "this is it, I'm dead". Fade to black. And the first thing I did once I was up in a wheelchair was to buy the red convertible! (I wonder if I had been in a regular old 900, with its integral roll cage, I might be up walking around today)
Obviously I'm not dead, and somehow steam to be okay, i.e. brain working at least as well as it used to, LOL. So I'm looking at getting hand controls and I guess, an automatic transmission, ugh, never thought much of the classic 900 automatic trannies.
Actually, I did have a idea the other day. I can't squeeze my hands at all. I can move my arms around some, like enough to steer a car with some pegs on the wheel. But I have what's called "wrist extension". I can imagine a servo control clutch master, which I could actuate with the wrist movement. So there'd be this funny thing on the shift lever, kind like a bicycle "pedal cage". This would be my clutch. This idea is pie-in-the-sky, at this point. But I am an embedded system software engineer -- I could design such a thing. For now though, I ride, in the right seat (here in America).
One more thing: one of the things that became necessary while I was in the hospital was that I had to sell a house that I was renting out. I needed the funds to buy another house and a conversion van. Anyway, in the back of a garage of this rental property I had to sell, was a pristine 1978 99 Turbo, which needed engine and trans. I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE THIS CAR HAULED OFF AS SCRAP. That still makes me sick today. I love the 99 Turbo. I wanted to put a new evolution engine in with the old continuous injection (with a physical air paddle, airflow sensor) --mmm, maybe I did do a little damage!?

Sorry to hear that, I guess it just goes to show we can't take life for granted. Not like buying a C900 requires a huge mental and/or financial commitment, but hey, it's the little happinesses in life that matter. I'm just glad you were in a Saab and not a flimsy crapanese car like a toyota or honda during the crash! And no, I won't even dignify those brands with a capital initial! :nono;

But I am an embedded system software engineer -- I could design such a thing.

Hey, so am I! I have a feeling there are a lot of Engineers here...I think it takes a technical mind with a capacity for creativity to fully appreciate and comprehend these cars...and who knows? If it's successful and you decide to market it, your ideas could spawn a whole new industry for independent vehicular mobility for disabled persons! I wish you the best of luck!

So what IS a "Commemorative"?

1993 & 1994 Commemorative Edition

314 Commemorative Edition 900 Turbo Coupés were made for the U.S. market in 1993. All the cars were black with tan leather interior and had 5-speed manual transmissions. The horsepower was increased to 185 hp by outfitting the cars with the "red box" APC controller, a 2.8 bar fuel pressure regulator (base turbo was 2.5 bar), and a distributor with enhanced vacuum advance. The cars rode on the SPG suspension. The interior was further embellished by a walnut dash facia and a leather gear knob and gaiter. The wheels were 15" "directionals" painted medium-gray metallic with a polished lip. Each Commemorative Edition was shipped with a small brass plaque indicating its number in the series. The plaques indicate that the number built was 325 but only 314 were actually built. Additionally, 15 identically-equipped cars were shipped to Canada but have metric instruments.
500 Commemorative Edition 900T convertibles were delivered to the U.S. market in 1994. They were the last 500 classic 900 convertibles to be built. They had the same performance modifications as the 1993 Commemorative Edition with the exception of the lower SPG suspension. They all had the 5-speed manual transmission, and came with the same uniquely styled wheels, walnut dash facia, and leather gear knob and gaiter. The tan leather interior was further enhanced with black piping, which was exclusive to this model. The cars were all painted Nova Black Metallic (another feature exclusive to the 1994 Comm Ed) and had tan canvass tops. 500 identically-equipped cars were shipped to Canada but have metric instruments.

Very similar to our Ruby, but there were only 150 of ours.

Beautiful car Jamal .. Classic car , Classic building . See the old brick Lintels over what had been windows , the erosion in the Bricks .. they have seen a few warsaw summers..and Winters ..
We have some very similar buildings near where I work (Melbourne , Australia ) probaly new comers relatively to those in Warsaw , Circa 1850's called Bond stores ( Predominately wool export ) .
In your building you can see the doorway up high near the chimneys that may have been once home to an old Gantry style hoist .. Anywhere near the ports that building ? or perhaps an old Coal driven power station ..

Great photography , Love the look of the car , Immaculate

Nice car Bri. I myself have the 85', and I love the pre-facelift look...it's very ...Saab! As for the clear coat, it looks like it's only peeling on the trunk lid? The rest of the car looks in great condition, it's easy enough to take the trunk lid off (or leave it on) and get that single piece repainted. The only difficulty in taking it off yourself is the springs that keep the lid open need to be extended with a tool to release the lid. If you have a method to do that, you can even grab a replacement from the yard if you're lucky enough to find one the same colour and in great condition!

Thanks, Racer! Mine is Commemorative #116. Previous owner put the SPG panels on it. I did a full restoration, but kept the panels on it.

Also has an SAS whale-tail and the vent covers, and the upper bump strip removed.

Other modifications include suspension work and mild engine work -- FPR, injectors, AID, more.
Jim,
Your car looks fantastic!! I should put up some pictures of mine, looks a lot like the one I have but needs some pain.
What are you using for springs, tires and do you get rubbing with others in the back?

My 1985 SAAB 900 at Cap Bon Désir near Tadoussac Quebec some 500 km from home. She performed like a champ even though I kind of wish she had a Turbo with all those 11% hills on the north cost of the Saint-Laurent river/gulf.

Thanks much, hkayssi! Commem's been fairly idle this month while sorting injector and electrical issues. Should be back on the road this week. Meanwhile, the Goat is getting a brake upgrade this week: DBA slotted and crossdrilled rotors with Hawk ceramic pads.

Jim,
If you don't mind me asking, could you give a bit of info on the adjustable springs and perches? also what kind of shocks? I have Intrax springs and Bilstein HD shocks, the ride is quite stiff and although it is fun a normal drive can be a bit hard at times. What is the ride on yours like?

Built by Brad of KCSaab, they are similar to coil-overs in that you have a jambnut and a collar to raise or lower the ride height to your liking, but the dampers are still external to the spring coils. Koni adjustibles were part of the kit. I think Brad has moved onto a true coilover since he's put out this kit, however I understand that he's also letting people know how to build their own if you still want to do the spring perch set up as I have it.

Ride is nice. Compliant and confortable for the highway, but nice and "flat" through the corners. Stiffer than stock to be sure, but not so rough as to give you a back/butt ache by the time you get out of the car. Very nice compromise IMO, but then I am biased... ;-)

From what I've seen, yes, but welding is involved. I believe the coilover mounts replaces the lower seat of the stock spring, and the upper mount is welded into where the cup at the top is.

Speculation on my part, but that's how I understand it works. Stock shock mounts are "abandoned" in the process.

Cant comment on the rears, other than to guess that it's likely a similar situation.

Let's go back a step - what do you think you'd gain?

Bolt-on aftermarket coilovers tend to use the spring in addition to whatever's standard-fit - leaf or whatever. You've already got coil springs and telescopic dampers.

OK, so the damper isn't currently inside the coil spring. Woo.

Well said. Hence, I never did, nor ever intend, to make that leap. The current adjustibility works just fine.

Yes, I'm 99% certain that they were. 1% is because I bought the car like this already. The seats are completely upholstered in the same leather, front and back.

I paid a bit more than average for this car but the interior was exactly what I wanted and probably would've cost more to have done than the price difference I paid.

It was done intentionally. My daughter made two stencils, one with the old Saab logo and one with the name she has given the car. She placed them on each corner of the bonnet before we did the painting. When she took them off, she had her designs there as the only reminders of the car's original red colour.

Here's my latest buy. I found this 'vert at a local Saab indy shop and asked them if it was for sale. They hadn't thought about it, but agreed to sell it for $700. It'll need some work, but any car you can drive off in for $700 with and SPG kit, SPG wheels with good tires, and a nice tear free top is a heck of a deal in my book. This photo is pretty much the way I bought it. I haven't had a chance to do anything more than an overall inspection for rust and other issues, and clean out the interior.

Gotta love English humor! :D

That car is definitely STUNNING.

Thank you, sir!

I WANT A 900!! :cry::cry:

You all have beautiful 900's. I'm noticing a trend though....do you buy them in pairs? :cheesy: It seems like nobody has just one....

For us, sort of a "his & hers" thing. Convertible was a gift to my wife, the Commemorative replaced an SPG that was a gift from her to me a few years ago. (SPG was totaled by a drunk driver).

Yes, I got away with that when I bought my vert. It took a while before she realised that I was the only one driving it.

That is the wifes XJ6 in the background...man I have too many projects... The last pic is my old '85 8v... we lost the starter, but everything else is good if someone needs something...
